Malawi – 130 Malawian students hospitalized due to food poisoning

English News

BLANTYRE, Malawi, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) — About 130 students from a secondary school in Malawi’s commercial city of Blantyre were rushed to hospital on Monday after they presented with serious signs of suspected food poisoning, according to local authorities.

The Ministry of Education said on Monday morning that 45 students were rushed to hospital and that 42 responded to the treatment and got discharged while three students were still admitted.

But a statement, released by the Blantyre District Health Office (DHO) late Monday afternoon, said a total of 131 students (from Lunzu Secondary School) were affected, and 53 students were treated as outpatients while 78 students were admitted to the hospital.

According to the statement, preliminary findings indicated that the incident may have resulted from poisoned flour, which was used to prepare the pulp that was given to the students.

USA – CDC Solves Norovirus Mystery On The Pacific Crest Trail

Although the REDCap survey identified only 27 ill hikers, social media reports indicated that the true size of the outbreak was likely substantially larger, with 27 reports with a date of onset, and numerous others without further chronologic information apart from the year (2022). Norovirus prevention in remote areas is difficult because of a lack of easily available clean water and soap for handwashing, and inability to routinely disinfect shared surfaces (e.g., cabins and restrooms). Moreover, alcohol-based hand sanitizers, commonly used in hiking, are not effective against norovirus (5). Preventing future outbreaks will require fostering increased awareness of the importance of handwashing and lack of effectiveness of alcohol-based hand sanitizers against norovirus, and more frequent cleaning of public facilities; early outbreak detection might be facilitated by social media surveillance.

UK dealing with E. coli and Salmonella outbreaks

Food Safety News

The United Kingdom is dealing with a serious outbreak of E. coli and several strains of Salmonella Enteritidis, according to the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

One more case has been added to the ongoing Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) O183 outbreak, bringing the total to 25 sick since May.

One person has died; while most patients live in England, others are sick in Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.

FSA and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) are trying to find the source with help from other public health agencies. Several product supply chains have been investigated, but no vehicle of infection has yet been identified.

FSA is also investigating outbreaks of separate strains of Salmonella Enteritidis linked to Polish eggs and poultry products.

One outbreak is behind 47 confirmed cases, of which 25 were linked to a restaurant and another 18 ill people had probable restaurant exposure.

Polish authorities found Salmonella Enteriditis at one site that sent eggs to the UK. Eggs from this source have also been linked to a second UK restaurant associated with the outbreak.
