Ottawa, September 19, 2020 – The food safety warning issued on August 11, 2020 has been updated to include additional product information. This additional information was identified during the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s (CFIA) food safety investigation.

Sunsprout Natural Foods is recalling Sprouts Alive brand and Sunsprout brand Micro – Greens Alfalfa from the marketplace due to possible Salmonella contamination. Consumers should not consume and retailers, restaurants, and institutions should not sell or use the recalled products described below.

What you should do

If you think you became sick from consuming a recalled product, call your doctor.

Check to see if you have the recalled products in your home or establishment. Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased.

Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick. Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections. Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.

Background

This recall was triggered by findings by the CFIA during its investigation into a foodborne illness outbreak. The CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products. If other high-risk products are recalled, the CFIA will notify the public through updated Food Recall Warnings.

The CFIA is verifying that industry is removing the recalled products from the marketplace.

Illnesses

Public Health Ontario is investigating an outbreak of human illness associated with consumption of these products.

Danger: Presence of salmonella

 

Salmonella can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, fever and headache within 6 to 72 hours after consumption. These symptoms may be aggravated in young children, immunocompromised individuals and the elderly. People who have consumed these products and who present these symptoms are advised to consult a doctor, notifying him of this consumption.

Scotland – Drinking Water Quality in Scotland 2019 Private Water Supplies

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The Drinking Water Quality Regulator for Scotland (DWQR) ensures that local authorities are meeting their regulatory duties in regard to the quality of private water supplies. DWQR also regulates the quality of water supplied by Scottish Water. The role of DWQR was created by the Water Industry (Scotland) Act 2002 (“the Act”), which gives the Regulator powers to obtain information. This report fulfils the requirement under the Act that the DWQR publishes a report
on the exercise of the Regulator’s functions during the previous year. This report relates to the calendar year 2019 and is for private water supplies. A similar report on the quality of water supplied by Scottish Water was published on Monday 10 August 2020. Private water supplies (PWS) are drinking water supplies that are not the responsibility of Scottish Water but of their owners and users. PWS regulations are enforced by local authorities. The regulations were revised in October 2017, bringing into force The Water Intended for
Human Consumption (Private Supplies) (Scotland) Regulations 2017 (“the 2017 regulations”). These cover large domestic or commercial supplies. Smaller household PWS (referred to as Type B supplies) continue to be governed by The Private Water Supplies (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (“the 2006 regulations”).

Bath Dunkin’ Donuts link in Hepatitis A scare

The Steuben County Public Health Department (SCPH) confirmed a case of hepatitis A in an individual who worked for several days while infectious at Dunkin’ Donuts located at 350 W. Morris Street in Bath.

This may have put customers and coworkers at that Dunkin’ Donuts at risk of acquiring hepatitis A infection. Public health officials are stressing there is a low risk of contracting illness, however, individuals who have not been previously vaccinated for Hepatitis A and who consumed food or drink from the Dunkin’ Donuts on August 17 through August 22 should monitor themselves and their families for symptoms for 50 days and seek medical evaluation for Hepatitis A if they develop symptoms of this infection.

“The Hepatitis A virus can be transmitted through consuming food or drinks that have been contaminated by an infectious individual,” said Darlene Smith, Public Health Director. “We recommend all residents get the Hepatitis A vaccine as part of their routine vaccine schedule. For those who have not been previously vaccinated, getting the Hepatitis A vaccine within two weeks of an exposure can prevent development of the infection.

Even though we are beyond the two-week window in this case, it is particularly important for those who may have been exposed at Dunkin’ Donuts on August 17 – 22 to consult with their healthcare provider.”
