Italy – Shelled almonds recalled due to Aflatoxin risk – breaking latest news

Several batches of shelled almonds branded Dattilo, Movida Catering and I&D Srl were withdrawn as a precaution by the Ministry of Health, due to the risk of contamination from aflatoxins, substances (potentially toxic) produced by some mushrooms that can develop during cultivation and harvesting. These are the withdrawn lots. Type it: 40 gram sachets with lot numbers 277/22 and 290/22; Movida Catering: 700 gram buckets with lot numbers 270/22, 294/22 and 273/22; Movida Catering: 1 kg buckets with lot numbers 277/22 and 291/22; I&D Srl: unbranded compostable 200 gram and 400 gram trays with lot numbers 279/22, 280/22 and 295/22. The notice reads: «Product not to be consumed. To be brought back to the point of sale.’

USA – FSIS Issues Public Health Alert for Frozen, Not-Ready-To-Eat Signature Select Breakfast Bowl Products Due to Possible Temperature Abuse at Distribution Center

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is issuing a public health alert due to concerns that not-ready-to-eat meat products were subject to temperature abuse during storage at a distribution center prior to delivery to retailers, which may have resulted in the growth of spoilage organisms or pathogens. FSIS is issuing this public health alert to ensure that consumers are aware that these products should not be consumed. A recall was not requested because the products are no longer available for purchase.

The following products are subject to the public health alert [view labels]:

  • 7-oz. cardboard box packages containing “Signature SELECT BREAKFAST BOWL SAUSAGE POTATOES, EGGS, SAUSAGE & CHEDDAR CHEESE” with a best if used by date of JAN 11 24, lot code S011322 and UPC 21130 18044.
  • 7-oz. cardboard box packages containing “Signature SELECT BREAKFAST BOWL BACON POTATOES, EGGS, BACON & CHEDDAR CHEESE” with a best if used by date of JAN 16 24, lot code S016331 and UPC 21130 18043.
  • 7-oz. cardboard box packages containing “Signature SELECT BREAKFAST BOWL MEAT LOVERS POTATOES, EGGS, CHEDDAR CHEESE, SAUSAGE & BACON” with a best if used by date of JAN 11 24, lot code S011322 and UPC 21130 18042.
  • 7-oz. cardboard box packages containing “Signature SELECT BREAKFAST BOWL SAUSAGE & GRAVY POTATOES, COUNTRY STYLE GRAVY, EGGS, SAUSAGE & CHEDDAR CHEESE” with a best if used by date of JAN 11 24, lot code S011331 and UPC 21130 18045.

The products bear establishment number “EST 45210” on the top panel of the cardboard box. These items were shipped to Albertsons Companies retail locations in Northern California and Northern Nevada. The Signature Select Breakfast Bowl products were available for purchase at the following Albertsons Companies banner stores: Andronico’s Community Markets, Pak ‘N Save, Safeway and Vons.

The problem was discovered when the producing establishment notified FSIS that their customer reported storing the product in an unrefrigerated area. FSIS found that the product was held at an incorrect temperature and then shipped into commerce. All remaining inventory of the affected items have been removed from the stores and destroyed.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an illness should contact a health care provider.

Jordan – Restaurant shut down after 19 suspected food poisoning cases

Jerash Governor Firas Al-Faour told Roya that the Jordan Food and Drug Administration (JFDA) closed the restaurant Tuesday morning after a number of people reported not feeling well after eating from that restaurant.

He noted that the closure decision was taken as a precautionary step until the results of the samples taken by the JFDA come out.

All cases were admitted to the Jerash Governmental Hospital and all, except for two children, have been discharged.

The two children are between four and five years of age, who are currently in stable/good health condition.

Faour warned citizens and residents to be careful when it comes to restaurant discounts and offers.

India – Over 40 taken ill in Ri-Bhoi; food poisoning suspected

NONGPOH, Feb 13: In a suspected case of food poisoning, more than 40 people from Nongkhrah village in Ri-Bhoi were admitted to hospitals a day after they attended a bachelor party on February 10.
As per sources, it was informed that the attendees of the bachelor party, which was held in the same village, were mostly locals.
It was also informed that more than 40 people, including women and children, fell sick a day after consuming pork at the gathering, and were rushed to Nongpoh Civil Hospital, Nongpoh and Bethany Hospital, Pahamsyiem for treatment.
The other attendees, who did not consume pork, did not, however, complain of any health issue.

India – Nearly 140 workers taken ill due to ‘food poisoning’ at Polavaram project site in Andhra Pradesh

Nearly 140 workers engaged in the construction activity at the Polavaram irrigation project site have complained of stomach ache and vomiting, allegedly due to food poisoning.

All of them are labourers belonging to the South and Central Indian States and are staying at a single camp on the project site.

India – 61 students fall sick due to food poisoning in Pune district

As many as 61 students of Hutatma Rajguru Vidyalaya of Tribal Education Institute in Rajgurunagar, Khed Taluka fell sick due to food poisoning on Thursday. The students were admitted to a rural hospital in Chandoli after experinging stomach pain and nausea.

They ate masala rice prepared by a self-help group after which they fell sick, said officials. The rice in one of the cooking pans tasted like soap, said children.

Samples of rice were taken and sent for inspection.

In agreement with the AFSCA, Lily’s Granola withdraws the product “ZEN GRANOLA quinoa and lavender” from the Lily’s Granola brand from sale and recalls it from consumers because of too high aflatoxin content in pistachios, used as an ingredient .

Lily’s Granola asks its customers not to consume this product and to return it to the point of sale where it was purchased.

New Zealand – Shellfish Biotoxin Alert – North Island

Reason for alert Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP)

Affected area The warning extends throughout the whole of the Kaipara Harbour up to a line across the entrance from the top of Oneone Beach across to North Head.
Shellfish affected Mussels, oysters, tuatua, pipi, toheroa, cockles, scallops, catseyes, kina (sea urchin) and all other bivalve shellfish.

Note, cooking shellfish does NOT remove the toxin.

Pāua, crab and crayfish may still be eaten if the gut has been completely removed prior to cooking, as toxins accumulate in the gut. If the gut is not removed its contents could contaminate the meat during the cooking process.

Symptoms Symptoms typically appear between 10 minutes and 3 hours after ingestion and may include:

  • numbness and a tingling (prickly feeling) around the mouth, face, and extremities (hands and feet)
  • difficulty swallowing or breathing
  • dizziness
  • headache
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhoea
  • paralysis and respiratory failure and in severe cases, death.
Other information Paralytic shellfish toxins have been detected in shellfish from the Kaipara Harbour at levels over the safe limit of 0.8mg/kg set by MPI. Ongoing testing will continue and any changes will be communicated accordingly.
