Quebec – Notice not to consume hummus manufactured and sold by Olly Fresco’s in Montreal – E.coli

QUEBEC CITY , June 30, 2023 /CNW/ – The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPAQ), in collaboration with the Food Inspection Division of the City of Montreal and the company Olly Fresco’s , located at 625 Ste-Catherine Street West, in Montreal, is warning the public not to consume the product listed in the table below because this food may contain  E.coli bacteria.

The product that is the subject of this warning was offered for sale until June 30, 2023 and only at the establishment designated above. It was packaged in clear plastic containers and sold chilled. The product label includes, in addition to its name, the mention “Olly Fresco’s”.

The operator is voluntarily recalling the product in question. It has agreed with MAPAQ and the Food Inspection Division of the City of Montreal to distribute this warning as a precautionary measure.

In addition, people who have this product in their possession are advised not to consume it. They must return it to the establishment where they bought it or throw it away. Foods contaminated with E.coli bacteria do not necessarily have any visible spoilage or suspicious smell, but can still make you sick. The possible symptoms are as follows: nausea, vomiting, more or less acute abdominal cramps and diarrhea.

Russia – Mass Food Poisoning at Summer Health Camp as Multiple Children Hospitalized

A large number of children have reported symptoms consistent with food poisoning at a summer health camp in Russia’s southeastern Amur Oblast, according to local authorities.

The regional prosecutor’s office said 70 children fell sick at the White Mountains camp, with symptoms including abdominal pain and vomiting. Eight were hospitalized and the camp was suspended, state-run news agency Tass reported.

Reports that children had fallen ill at the health camp began circulating on social media on Thursday, sparking an investigation into how the facility had complied with sanitary and hygienic requirements.

A Salmonella outbreak at Solano County jails in California has allegedly sickened more than a hundred inmates, according to the Vallejo Sun. All three jails in that county have ill inmates, and the outbreak has lasted more than a week, a spokesperson for the Solano County Sheriff’s Office told that outlet.

There are three jails in that county, including the Stanton Correctional Facility, the Claybank Detention Facility, and the Solano County Justice Center Detention Facility. Trinity Services Group provides the food for all three jails, and the Solano County Department of Health has been working with that establishment to clean their facility and to test food for contamination.

USA – Applesauce recalled over elevated patulin levels

Motts LLP, of Frisco, TX, is recalling 9,593 cases of Motts applesauce because of elevated patulin levels.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), patulin is a mycotoxin produced by a variety of molds, particularly Aspergillus, Penicillium and Byssochlamys. Often found in rotting apples and apple products. The acute symptoms in humans include nausea, gastrointestinal disturbances and vomiting.

According to the details posted online by the FDA, the recall was initiated on May 18, 2023, and is ongoing.

The recalled products were distributed in the U.S. in the following states: Alaska, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin. It was also distributed in Bermuda and the Dominican Republic.

Research – New insights on bacteria that causes food poisoning

A joint research group has clarified how pathogenic genes in some Providencia spp., which have gained attention as causative agents of food poisoning as well as enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli. O157 and Salmonella, are transferred within bacterial cells. Their findings are expected to provide new insights into the identification of infection routes of Providencia spp. and the establishment of preventive methods for food poisoning.

More than 50 people got sick after attending an Iowa wedding, and the bride’s concerns prompted an inspection that found flaws in the way the catering restaurant stored its meat.

Lindsey Graham-Humphreys told the Des Moines Register that her new husband got sick the morning after the wedding and that she soon learned of others who were also sick. Eventually, she found that 51 people had fallen ill — some for two days or more.
