UK – Chef sentenced after one killed and 31 left ill by undercooked shepherd’s pie

The Guardian

A church harvest supper at a village pub ended in tragedy when one of the congregation was killed and 31 others suffered food poisoning after eating a shepherd’s pie filled with mince that had been incorrectly prepared by a rushing chef.

Elizabeth Neuman, 92, repeatedly vomited after eating the pie and died while other parishioners became “unpleasantly ill” and three of those attending only escaped because they were vegetarians, Reading crown court heard.

The cook, John Croucher, who at the time was head chef at the Crewe Arms in the Northamptonshire village of Hinton-in-the-Hedges, was given a four-month jail sentence, suspended for 12 months, after admitting a charge of contravening food regulations.

A recently opened Kingston doughnut store has closed amid widespread reports it is the source of dozens of food poisoning complaints across the ACT.

Reports emerged at the weekend on social media of locals experiencing vomiting and nausea after eating food from Mrs Kim’s Donuts.

The doughnut bar opened in July 2021 but has now closed its doors and removed its Facebook and Instagram pages.

The business’s Google search results now have it listed as permanently closed.

ACT Health has not confirmed it is investigating Mrs Kim’s but says it has received around 130 complaints about a single business.

South Africa – Suspected food poisoning leaves 2 dead, 29 others ill after eating funeral food

News 24

The Gauteng health department says it is dealing with a cluster outbreak of suspected food poisoning cases following the funeral of an elderly woman in Kagiso.

The department’s spokesperson Kwara Kekana said they were working closely with the West Rand District in investigating the incident.

According to Kekana, the  poisoning was suspected to have emanated from a funeral at Kadima Street on Saturday, 13 November.

“Food was served around 11:00 and reports of sudden vomiting and diarrhoea began at around 16:00 on the same day,” said Kekana.

“On Sunday evening, there were rumours of eight cases of people with symptoms and one death.”

“Water and food samples have also been collected and the District Health Services is awaiting results,” Kekana added.

Meanwhile, last week, the Department of Health initiated an urgent investigation into possible food poisoning in Mpumalanga, Eastern Cape, and Gauteng following the deaths of children after allegedly consuming noodles.
