USA – Cyclospora Bagged Salad Outbreak in Iowa Affects 160 – And Authorities are Still Counting

Iowa continues to hold the highest number of cases in the ongoing Fresh Express Bagged Salad Cyclospora Outbreak, compared to the other 7 affected states, with a total of 160 confirmed cases.

Cyclospora, officially known as Cyclospora cayetanensis, is a type of parasite which uses the human gut as its host. The parasite enters the human body by being ingested with fresh fruits, vegetables, or water, at which point the parasite begins to live and multiply in the gut.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) reports that the investigation of the Fresh Express Bagged Salad Cyclospora Outbreak continues, as the CDC reports increasingly greater numbers of confirmed cases of infection. The last investigation report published by the FDA concerning the Fresh Express Cyclospora Outbreak, on June 28, 2020, accounted for 206 confirmed cases of Cyclospora infection. As of July 8, 2020, the FDA announced that the number of confirmed cases have jumped to a total of 509, across 8 states. Furthermore, health officials report that the outbreak has even stretched across the borders of the U.S. to three provinces of Canada, Ontario (26), Quebec (10) and Newfoundland and Labrador (1).

Research – Research shows estimated 180 deaths per year in UK because of foodborne illness

Researchers have estimated there are 180 deaths per year in the United Kingdom caused by foodborne diseases from 11 pathogens.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) estimates that about 2.4 million cases of foodborne illness occur every year in the UK.

Foodborne norovirus is projected to cause 56 deaths per year, Salmonella 33 deaths, Listeria monocytogenes 26, Clostridium perfringens 25, and Campylobacter 21. Most fatalities occur in those aged 75 years and older.

Foodborne deaths from Shigella, Cryptosporidium, Giardia, adenovirus, astrovirus and rotavirus are rare, according to the study published in the journal BMJ Open Gastroenterology.

SAITAMA — The cause of a food poisoning outbreak that affected a total of 3,453 students and others at 15 public schools in the city of Yashio, Saitama Prefecture, eastern Japan, has been pinpointed to a seaweed salad harboring E. coli bacteria, the city’s board of education advised on July 13.

The number of people infected in the Havelock North campylobacter crisis in 2016 was much higher than previously estimated, new research suggests.

Thousands of people were infected by drinking water from contaminated bores. Four people died and others were left permanently disabled.

The study suggests the campylobacteriosis case number could be as high as 8320, with up to 2230 of these living outside of Havelock North.

The Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR) science leader Dr Brent Gilpin said the study used DNA sequencing to link cases.

Netherlands -Fatal Listeria outbreak linked to trout in the Netherlands

At least two people have died in a Listeria outbreak linked to chilled smoked trout fillets in the Netherlands.

All six sick people have been hospitalized and two died from their infections. Another person has died but no information about the cause of death was given.

Patients became ill between the beginning of February and mid-June. Their age range is 42 to 85 years old with a median of 78 years old.

In 2018, CDC was notified of 511 laboratory-confirmed cases of Cyclospora infections in people from 15 states and New York City who reported consuming a variety of salads from McDonald’s restaurants in the Midwest.

On July 26, 2018, the FDA completed final analysis of an unused package of romaine lettuce and carrot mix distributed to McDonald’s by the Fresh Express processor in Streamwood, IL. The analysis confirmed the presence of Cyclospora in that sample.

India -76 people from Andhra’s Visakha tribal area hospitalised with food poisoning

At least 76 residents of a village in the Paderu ITDA (Integrated Tribal Development Agency) limits suffered food poisoning on Wednesday after consuming contaminated meat. The incident occurred in Magatapalem village of Gaduturu panchayat, in Gangaraju Madugula mandal of the Paderu Agency region.

While it was ascertained that the meat was contaminated, he said that it was unclear whether it was because of the way the cow died, or because of the cooking process.

Paderu MLA Bhagyalakshmi Kottagulli, who visited the patients at the hospital, told the media that the exact cause of the food-borne illness was yet to be determined. “They unknowingly ate polluted food. We are requesting people to be careful with their health.”

 

 

Taiwan – Taiwan records 6,944 food poisoning cases in 2019, marking 23-year high

Taiwan recorded 6,944 instances of food poisoning last year, which marked a 23-year high, according to numbers released by the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

In 2019, there were 503 food poisoning incidents, leading to 6,944 people becoming ill, compared to 2018 when 398 cases caused 4,616 people to get sick, according to government figures cited by Liberty Times. Last year’s number of cases was also the second-highest since the country started keeping food poisoning records in 1981.

The highest number occurred in 1997. when 7,235 people were affected by food poisoning.

Among last year’s cases, 4,000 people came down with food poisoning while at school. Most of these were linked to the large group meals served during lunchtime.
