Spain – Presence of Listeria monocytogenes in Goat’s Roll Cheese from the Netherlands

The Catalan Public Health Agency was informed, on 16 October 2020, by the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) through the Coordinated System for the Rapid Exchange of Information (SCIRI) of the presence of the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes in the product Goat’s Roll Cheese , made in the Netherlands and marketed from Germany.

The German company JERMI, which packages and markets the product, has detected Listeria monocytogenes in the course of its self-checks on the goat cheese product, which has been sold exclusively to Lidl.

This alert is extended to all batches and all expiration dates.

With the information available, no case associated with this alert has been confirmed in Spain.

People who have products affected by this alert at home are advised to refrain from consuming it and return it to the point of purchase.

USA – Listeria outbreak linked to deli meat sickens 10, kills one

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the U.S. Department of Agriculture and health officials from several states report investigating  a multistate outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes infections linked to deli meats.

10 people were infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes from 3 states (New York (2), Massachusetts (7) and Florida (1).

All 10 people were hospitalized. One death has been reported from Florida.

In interviews with 9 ill people, all reported eating Italian-style meats, such as salami, mortadella, and prosciutto. They reported purchasing prepackaged deli meats and meats sliced at deli counters at various locations.

A specific type of deli meat and common supplier have not yet been identified.

Belgium – Recall of Bio-Planet – Preparations made from chicken fillet – Salmonella

During microbiological checks at the supplier, the presence of Salmonella was observed in a raw material used in several preparations made from chicken fillet. The use-by date for these products is: 10/21/2020.

In consultation with the AFSCA, Bio-Planet has therefore decided to withdraw the products concerned from sale.

Customers who have purchased these products are advised not to consume them and to bring them back to the store, where they will be reimbursed. In the meantime, all stores have removed the affected products from the shelves.

Possible symptoms of Salmonella poisoning

The possible symptoms of poisoning caused by Salmonella are: fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. These symptoms usually appear within 12 to 48 hours after ingestion.

Symptoms usually last 4 to 7 days, and most people recover without specific treatment. Young children, pregnant women, the immunocompromised and the elderly are among the groups at risk. In these people, the symptoms can be severe enough to require hospitalization of the patient.

People who have consumed these products and who present this type of symptoms are invited to consult their doctor, notifying him of this consumption.

Following a control and as a precautionary measure in order to guarantee the safety of the consumer, SOUFFLET ALIMENTAIRE requests to withdraw from the trade the products RIZ BASMATI 1KG and RIZ BASMATI 4X125GR of the Carrefour brand sold in the grocery department of certain Carrefour stores in Belgium and remind consumers of them due to a too high aflatoxin content.

Aflatoxins are mycotoxins that can be present in different products such as grains, coffee, rice, raisins and dried fruits.

There is no direct risk. Aflatoxin only presents a health risk with high and repeated consumption. However, people who hold these products are asked not to consume them and to return them to the point of sale where they will be reimbursed.

Spain – Updating of the information regarding the withdrawal of certain batches of the product “Fuet Cabanes 150g” due to the presence of Salmonella spp.

ACSA

The Agència de Salut Pública de Catalunya of the Departament de Salut de la Generalitat de Catalunya (ASPCAT) informs that in application of the precautionary principle, it has ordered the precautionary suspension of the activity of making fuet / espetec of the company name EMBUTIDOS SOLA SA.

Likewise, it has ordered the withdrawal from the market of all the fuet / espetec product produced by EMBUTIDOS SOLA SA (sanitary marks 10.12147 / B and 10.01924 / B) of any batch, format and presentation (150g, 140g, 175g and 800g, both units whole as sliced ​​in 125g containers).

The ASPCAT food control health authorities will verify the withdrawal of the products in the Catalan establishments involved. At the level of the Spanish State, the alert is being managed through the Rapid Information Exchange System (SCIRI).

If new information on this alert becomes available, ASPCAT will update this release.

Canada – Outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to peaches imported from the United States

This notice has been updated to advise that the outbreak appears to be over and the outbreak investigation has been closed. Peaches imported from the United States are no longer under investigation.

Why should you take note

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) collaborated with federal and provincial public health partners, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (U.S. CDC), and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to investigate an outbreak of Salmonella infections that occurred in two provinces. Given that Salmonella illness reporting linked to this outbreak has significantly decreased over the last four weeks, the outbreak appears to be over and the investigation has been closed.

Investigation findings identified exposure to peaches from Prima Wawona from the United States as a likely source of the outbreak. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued a consumer advisory for peaches recalled by Prima Wawona, sold from June 1, 2020 to August 22, 2020 in Canada. These peaches included yellow, white and organic peaches and were sold under various brand names:

  • Wawona
  • Wegmans

Canadians are advised not to eat any recalled products or any foods containing recalled products.

In agreement with the AFSCA, Vleeswaren Coenen & Co is withdrawing from sale the chicken salad with curry “Kip currysla” and meat salad “Vleessalade” and is recalling them to consumers because of the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes.
