USA – FDA Warning Letter – Sabra Dipping Company, LLC

FDA

WARNING LETTER
CMS #615938

December 1, 2021

Dear Mr. Bergstein:

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) jointly inspected your ready-to-eat (RTE) hummus manufacturing facility located at 15900 Sabra Way, South Chesterfield, Virginia, from April 28, 2021 through May 6, 2021. The inspection was initiated by FDA and VDACS after FDA Investigators collected a sample of Sabra Classic Hummus from retail and subsequent testing revealed the sample contained Salmonella enterica serovar Havana Group G (hereinafter Salmonella Havana). After being notified by FDA on March 26, 2021, you initiated a Class I voluntary recall of your Sabra Classic Hummus product.

During a joint inspection of your facility, FDA and VDACS Investigators found serious violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice, Hazard Analysis, and Risk-Based Preventive Controls for Human Food regulation (CGMP & PC rule), Title 21, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 117 (21 CFR Part 117). At the conclusion of the inspection, the Investigators issued you an FDA Form 483, Inspectional Observations. Based on FDA’s inspectional findings, we have determined that the RTE hummus products manufactured in your facility are adulterated within the meaning of section 402(a)(4) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (the Act) [21 U.S.C. § 342(a)(4)], in that they were prepared, packed or held under insanitary conditions whereby they may have been contaminated with filth or rendered injurious to health. In addition, failure of the owner, operator, or agent in charge of a covered facility to comply with the preventive controls provisions of the CGMP & PC rule (located in subparts A, C, D, E, F, and G of part 117) is prohibited by section 301(uu) of the Act [21 U.S.C. § 331(uu)].

Additionally, the presence of Salmonella Havana in your RTE hummus products, as evidenced by the laboratory analysis of FDA’s retail sampling, causes your recalled Classic hummus products to be adulterated within the meaning of section 402(a)(1) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (the Act) [21 U.S.C. § 342(a)(1)] in that they bear or contain an added poisonous or deleterious substance which may render them injurious to health. You may find the Act and further information about the CGMP & PC rule through links in FDA’s home page at www.fda.gov.External Link Disclaimer

We received your written responses on May 27, 2021 and July 8, 2021, which describe your completed and planned corrective actions. After reviewing the inspectional findings and responses you provided, we are issuing this letter to advise you of FDA’s concerns and provide detailed information describing the findings at your facility.

USA – Outbreak Investigation of Salmonella Thompson – Seafood (October 2021) – Outbreak Over.

FDA

The FDA, along with CDC and state and local partners, investigated a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Thompson infections linked to seafood manufactured or processed by Northeast Seafood Products, Inc. of Denver, CO. As of 12/6/2021, the CDC has declared this outbreak over. According to CDC, the majority of sick people were either Colorado residents or reported traveling to Colorado in the week before they got sick.

FDA’s traceback investigation identified Northeast Seafood Products, Inc. as a common distributor among illness sub-clusters. As part of this outbreak investigation, environmental samples were collected from Northeast Seafood Products, Inc. On 10/7/2021, environmental samples collected from Northeast Seafood Products, Inc. were reported positive for Salmonella Thompson and were determined to be a match to the outbreak strain through whole genome sequencing.

On 10/8/2021, Northeast Seafood Products, Inc. recalled Haddock, Monkfish, Bone-in Trout, Grouper, Red Snapper, Red Rock Cod, Ocean Perch, Pacific Cod, Halibut, Coho Salmon, Atlantic Salmon Portions, Lane Snapper, Tilapia, All Natural Salmon Fillet, Pacific Sole, and Farm Raised Striped Bass. These products were sold to restaurant and Albertsons, Safeway, and Sprouts supermarkets in Colorado. The Pacific Cod sold through Sprouts is not being recalled. A full list of recalled products is available on FDA’s website.

Recommendation

Consumers, restaurants, and retailers should not eat, sell, or serve any recalled seafood. Recalled seafood was sold fresh and would be past shelf-life unless it was frozen after purchase. FDA recommends that anyone who might have purchased or received recalled product, check their freezers and throw away recalled product.

A full list of recalled products is available on FDA’s website.

South Africa- Safari recalls some products following Salmonella contamination.

OFM

Safari recalls some products following salmonella contamination | News Article

Pretoria-based Pioneer Foods has announced that it is recalling specific batches of the Peanuts & Raisins and Cashew nuts products, sold under its Safari brand in South Africa, Botswana and Namibia.

This after routine testing at the Safari production site in KwaZulu-Natal identified a batch of products which tested positive for low levels of salmonella.

Pioneer Foods says production was halted following the discovery, with the product placed on hold and ring-fenced.

It’s understood a limited number of cases of Safari 60g Peanuts & Raisins and Safari 100g Raw Cashews products were released from the site last month, despite having been isolated for destruction.

“This limited number of affected products should never have been released into trade, and whilst we have not received any health-related complaints from consumers to date, we have decided to proceed to proactively recall these specific products,” says CEO, Tertius Carstens.

At least 92% of the products have been retrieved.

“All other Safari products remain safe for consumption,” the company adds.

“We have already engaged with the South African National Consumer Commission as well as the South African Department of Health.

“Consumers who have the products listed above, with the specific batch or date coding, are urged to return these products to the retailer from which they were purchased in order to receive a full refund.”
