USA -Outbreak Investigation of E. coli O157:H7: Raw Cheddar Cheese (February 2024)

FDA

Current Update

February 28, 2024

The FDA and CDC, in collaboration with state and local partners, are continuing to investigate a multistate outbreak of E. coli O157:H7.

As this investigation is ongoing, FDA and CDC continue to recommend that people do not eat, sell, or serve RAW FARM-brand Raw Cheddar cheese made by RAW FARM, LLC, of Fresno, CA. State and local public health officials have interviewed people about the foods they ate in the week before they became sick. Nearly all sick people, seven out of nine (78%), reported eating RAW FARM-brand Raw Cheddar cheese and this continues to show these cheeses are the likely source of this outbreak. E. coli can cause an infection that may lead to serious kidney problems. Anyone who ate the raw cheeses and has symptoms of E. coli infection should contact their healthcare provider.

As of February 28, 2024, a total of 11 confirmed infections have been reported from five states, including CA (4), CO (3), NJ (1), TX (1), and UT (2). Whole genome sequencing analysis of E. coli isolates from ill people shows that they are all closely related genetically to each other. This means that people in this outbreak are likely to share a common source of infection. Five patients have been hospitalized; two developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a serious condition that can lead to kidney failure. No deaths have been reported.

Health officials in CO, CA, and UT have collected various RAW FARM-brand products for testing, including Raw Milk, Raw Butter, Raw Cheddar cheese, and Raw Kefir. So far, no product samples have detected E. coli. While E. coli has not been found in product samples, epidemiologic evidence shows that RAW FARM-brand Raw Cheddar cheese made by RAW FARM, LLC is the likely source of this outbreak. Additional testing is ongoing.

In response to this investigation, on February 16, 2024, RAW FARM, LLC initiated a recall of certain lots of RAW FARM-brand Raw Cheddar cheese currently within shelf life. On February 26, 2024, RAW FARM, LLC withdrew their voluntary recall.

The investigation is ongoing, and FDA will update this advisory should additional consumer safety information become available.

Danger  : Possible presence of Salmonella

Salmonella can cause symptoms such as lack of appetite, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever and lethargy after consumption in fragile animals (very young, old, weakened). In healthy animals, salmonella generally causes few or no symptoms. When the animal has eaten the product concerned and presents these symptoms, its owner is invited to consult a veterinarian and report this consumption.

In the absence of symptoms, animals can be healthy carriers of salmonellosis, that is to say excrete salmonella in their stools without being sick. A risk of contamination via the excrement of the animal having consumed the product or directly via the contaminated food therefore exists for all people in contact with the animal or food concerned.

The product can be distributed by different points of sale in Luxembourg.

EU court backs Greek decision on company’s food safety product – Listex 100

Food Safety News

A European court has backed a decision by Greek authorities not to approve a product designed to prevent Listeria in certain products.

The case involves Listex P100, a product from Dutch company Micreos, intended for use against Listeria monocytogenes in ready-to-eat food of animal origin. The court ruled that the EU Commission must approve such a product.

A Greek court requested a preliminary ruling in late 2022 in the case between Micreos Food Safety and the Hellenic Food Authority (EFET).

EFET refused to authorize Listex P100 for the Greek market, as the EU Commission has not approved. The phage-based product is a spray designed to prevent the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in ready-to-eat (RTE) food of animal origin, such as fish, dairy, and meat products.

Research – Comprehensive Review on the Biocontrol of Listeria monocytogenes in Food Products

MDPI

Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne pathogen that causes listeriosis, a group of human illnesses that appear more frequently in countries with better-developed food supply systems. This review discusses the efficacy of actual biocontrol methods combined with the main types of food involved in illnesses. Comments on bacteriophages, lactic acid bacteria, bacteriocins, essential oils, and endolysins and derivatives, as main biological antilisterial agents, are made bearing in mind that, using them, food processors can intervene to protect consumers. Both commercially available antilisterial products and solutions presented in scientific papers for mitigating the risk of contamination are emphasized. Potential combinations between different types of antilisterial agents are highlighted for their synergic effects (bacteriocins and essential oils, phages and bacteriocins, lactic acid bacteria with natural or synthetic preservatives, etc.). The possibility to use various antilisterial biological agents in active packaging is also presented to reveal the diversity of means that food processors may adopt to assure the safety of their products. Integrating biocontrol solutions into food processing practices can proactively prevent outbreaks and reduce the occurrences of L. monocytogenes-related illnesses.

Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

Roland® Tahini (100% Ground Sesame Seeds) 16 oz. was distributed to many states through retail stores and foodservice outlets. The product was distributed by Roland Foods from September 2023 through January 2024.

South Africa – Peanut butter suppliers given 14 days to test products for Aflatoxin

Business Live

All manufacturers of peanut butter products have been called on to test for aflatoxin and present their results to the National Consumer Commission (NCC) within 14 days.

This comes after the recall of various peanut butter products earlier in February over concerns about the levels of the toxin. These include Pick n Pay No Name Smooth Peanut Butter, Eden Smooth Peanut Butter and Eden Crunch Peanut Butter, and certain batches of Dis-Chem’s Lifestyle Food peanut butter. The latest recalls also affected Woolworths’ peanut butter ice cream and certain Eat Naked products.

The consumer commission’s notice this week affects all peanut butter and peanut butter-based products, and products with peanuts, including chocolates, sweets, cookies, ice cream, and peanut butter spreads.
