Research – Practices that Lead to Microbial Contamination of Milk in Zimbabwe’s Informal Dairy Sector

Food Safety.com

A recent study provided insight into the on-farm hygiene characteristics that affect the contamination of milk produced at informal dairy farms in Zimbabwe. The research was led by the Zimbabwe Ministry of Health and Childcare’s Department of Food and Microbiology, in collaboration with Midlands State University, the University of Venda, and the National Food Institute at the Technical University of Denmark.

Specifically, the study looked at the microbiological safety level profiles (MSLPs) of dairy workers’ hands and milking containers, and the influence of hygiene and handling practices on MSLPs of raw and cultured milk, from six informal dairy farms in Zimbabwe. Interviews and direct observations were conducted to assess hygiene and handling practices, and a total of 192 environmental swabs and milk samples were taken to be analyzed for the presence of microbes. The researchers sampled and swabbed raw milk, cultured milk, the dairy workers’ hands, and milking containers, which were analyzed for total bacterial and coliform counts, Escherichia coliSalmonellaListeria monocytogenes, and Klebsiella pneumonia.

UK – Over a Year Later, UK Man Still Suffering from Food Poisoning Symptoms

Food Poisoning News

A severe food poisoning outbreak linked to a kebab shop in Abergavenny, Wales, in the UK has left at least one victim still suffering from health complications more than a year later. John Inglesby, 76, is among over 50 customers who contracted shigella bacteria after eating at Marmaris Kebab House in February 2023.  Food Poisoning News reported on this story last month.

Inglesby’s ordeal began when he visited the kebab shop shortly after returning to work following his wife’s death, according to The Sun. What should have been a comforting meal turned into a nightmare as he experienced severe symptoms including diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and sweats. A visit to the doctor confirmed he had contracted shigella, a highly contagious intestinal infection spread through contaminated food.

Research – Ireland reveals illness data for early 2024

Food Safety News

According to a recent report, Campylobacter and Listeria infections have increased, but Salmonella and E. coli cases dropped in Ireland in the first three months of 2024.

Campylobacter infections increased from 700 in Q1 2023 to 733 in Q1 2024. Listeria infections rose from one to five. Salmonella cases decreased from 84 to 67, and Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) infections declined from 131 to 116.

Data comes from a report published by the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) that includes foodborne illnesses from January to March 2024. It is the first one since such reports were halted after the Q4 2019 edition due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
