UK – Two E. coli O157 infections linked to English farm

Two confirmed cases of E. coli O157 infection have been linked to a farm in England.

Acton Scott Historic Working Farm in Shropshire temporarily closed this past week to take precautionary measures to reduce the risk of visitors becoming infected. The steps include providing more handwashing facilities and improving safety information about feeding and touching animals.

Members of the Public Health England (PHE) West Midlands Health Protection Team and environmental health colleagues from Shropshire Council are involved in the investigation at the farm, which is owned by the council. No information was provided about the patients.

India – 17 Hospitalised After Suspected Food Poisoning In Uttar Pradesh Village

Mathura: 

Fifteen women and two children from a Uttar Pradesh village were admitted to hospital after allegedly suffering from food poisoning, the police said on Friday.

Sample of food has been sent to Food Inspector for examination.

In the Pure Eire yogurt E. coli outbreak that has sickened at least 16 people in Washington and Arizona, some of the patients have contracted secondary food poisoning infections. This term may not be familiar to everyone. So what is this type of infection?

A secondary food poisoning infection occurs when someone gets sick from contact with another person, not by eating contaminated food or drinking contaminated water. Many pathogens can be spread person-to-person, by direct contact and common contact with fomites (surfaces), both through the fecal-oral route.

India – 44 villagers fall sick due to food poisoning in Telangana

44 persons fell sick due to food poisoning at Thadiathnoor village in Narnoor mandal here on Friday. Four were shifted to RIMS for better treatment, while the others were shifted to the Narnoor PHC.

The villagers had attended a function on Thursday evening, where they consumed chappati and mango juice. They fell sick on Friday morning. DMHO K Manohar visited the patients at the hospital.

Italy – Tuna suspected for a dozen illnesses in Italy – Food Poisoning

At least 12 people are sick in Italy with tuna being investigated as the source of their illnesses.

The foodborne outbreak is suspected to have been caused by thawed yellowfin tuna steaks with added water from Italy and raw material from Spain.

In recent days, nine people with symptoms such as such as nausea, vomiting and loss of consciousness or fainting were reported to the Tuscany local health unit (ASL) and admitted to two hospitals before later being discharged.

They all reported consumption of tuna in various forms at two different restaurants in Florence.

Portugal – 27 children in Faro Hospital with symptoms of food poisoning

A total of 27 children were taken to the University Hospital Centre of the Algarve in Faro on 27 May “with symptoms compatible with food poisoning”, but with no need for hospitalisation, a source at the hospital told the Lusa news agency.

“There were 27 children admitted to the emergency department with symptoms compatible with food poisoning, all stable and, so far, with no need for hospitalisation”, a source at Faro Hospital explained.

The Faro District Command of Rescue Operations (CDOS) said the incident had occurred at the Dr João Lúcio primary school, in Fuseta, in Olhão.

Contacted by Lusa news agency, the mayor of Olhão, António Pina, said he was “trying to find out details”, indicating that it was possibly a case of food poisoning.

EU Research – Risk characterisation of ciguatera poisoning in Europe

The EuroCigua project main objective is to characterize the risk of Ciguatera Poisoning (CP) in Europe including several specific objectives: to determine the incidence of ciguatera in Europe and the epidemiological characteristics of cases; to assess the presence of ciguatoxin in food and the environment in Europe and to develop and validate methods for the detection, quantification and confirmation of the presence of ciguatoxin contaminated specimens.

This report compiles the activities carried out during the EuroCigua project from the signing in April 2016 until December 2020. The present document corresponds to Deliverable No. 6: “Final Scientific Report” on Risk characterization of ciguatera food poisoning in Europe of the Specific Agreement no. 1 “MANAGEMENT AND SCIENTIFIC COORDINATION” within the Framework Partnership Agreement GP/EFSA/AFSCO/2015/03 “Risk characterization of ciguatera food poisoning in Europe”.
