Spain records Salmonella and Yersinia increases in 2022

Food Safety News

Salmonella and Yersinia infections went up in Spain in 2022, based on the latest figures.

A total of 8,777 Salmonella infections were reported, as well as 39 imported cases. In the previous year, 6,156 infections and four imported cases were recorded.

Salmonellosis affected men slightly more than women. The age group with the highest incidences were those younger than 5 years old, according to data from the National Epidemiological Surveillance Network (RENAVE).

The main Salmonella serotype identified was Typhimurium, with 708 cases, followed by Enteritidis, with 630 cases. A clear seasonal pattern was observed for both, with cases increasing during the warmest months of the year and reaching a peak in August.

In 2022, there were 1,015 cases of yersiniosis reported as well as three imported infections. This is up from 744 cases in 2021.

Illness mainly affected children, with the highest incidence reported in those younger than 5. Males were more often sick than females.

In all cases with information on the species, Yersinia enterocolitica was identified in 779 cases, and there were two cases of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis. The median age of Yersinia enterocolitica cases was 16, while the two Yersinia pseudotuberculosis cases were 47 and 48 years old.

USA – Listeria in Raw Milk – Again

Food Poison Journal

New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Commissioner Richard A. Ball today warned consumers not to consume unpasteurized raw milk from Nathaniel Thompson, doing business as (DBA) Remembrance Farm, due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.  Remembrance Farm is located at 6294 Searsburg Road, Trumansburg in Tompkins County. To date, no illnesses have been reported to the Department associated with this product.

A sample of the milk collected by an inspector from the Department was discovered to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. On August 11, 2023 the producer was notified of a preliminary positive test result. Further laboratory testing, completed on August 15, 2023, confirmed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in the raw milk sample. The producer is now prohibited from selling raw milk until subsequent sampling indicates that the product is free of harmful bacteria.

Spain – Hundreds sickened in Spain by water contaminated with parasite

Food Safety News

More than 450 people have been sickened in a Spanish town after drinking and using contaminated water.

Public health officials in Tarazona, in the province of Zaragoza, reported 452 illnesses since early September. Most patients have had a mild illness with symptoms including diarrhea, sometimes vomiting, and a fever.

Analyzes commissioned by Tarazona Council from independent laboratories confirmed the presence of the Cryptosporidium parasite in the Queiles River. Cryptosporidium has also been found in patient samples.

Council staff and public health authorities are trying to find the source, as well as how and where water contamination occurred, so that they can eliminate the problem. At least 45,000 liters of bottled water have been distributed to residents and schools.

Research – Cooked rice safety: A review of status and potential of radiative pasteurization

Wiley Online

Abstract

Microbial contamination in cooked rice-based foods poses a global concern due to rice’s widespread consumption. This review aims to consolidate information on harmful microorganisms associated with such foods from various countries and their adverse effects on consumers. Additionally, it explores the reported causes of microbial contamination in cooked rice-based dishes and proposes an intervention strategy for safer consumption. The findings highlight that ready-to-eat cooked rice-based foods may harbor unsafe levels of microorganisms like Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, and Aspergillus spp. A recommended solution is the application of microwave pasteurization. This method involves cooking rice in pasteurized packaging, minimizing human contact, and effectively controlling harmful microorganisms. Microwave pasteurization emerges as a promising approach to ensure the safe consumption of cooked rice-based foods by reducing microbial contamination levels.
