USA – Estancia Holdings Recalls Tome Corse Sheep Ottavi Due to Potential Listeria monocytogenes Contamination

Estancia Holdings of Cumming, GAis recalling one Lot of Tome Corse Sheep Ottavi due to a potential contamination of Listeria monocytogenes.  Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, a Listeria monocytogenes infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

On June 22, 2023 Estancia Holdings was notified by the French supplier that a wheel they received may be contaminated with Listeria Monocytogenes.

No illnesses have been reported to date.  Wheels have Ottavi dairy label on top and are wrapped in clear plastic.  Image of wheel is below:

One case from the affected Lot was imported the week of June 9th and it was sold the same week to a distributor in Portland, Oregon.  All customers of the Portland, Oregon distributor that received cheese from the affected Lot, have been contacted by the distributor.

Purpose

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is advising consumers not to purchase or eat Everest Garam Masala, Everest Sambhar Masala, and Maggi Masala ae Magic spices with the lot numbers referenced above because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

Summary of Problem and Scope

The FDA analyzed samples of the three products, Everest Garam Masala, Everest Sambhar Masala, and Maggi Masala ae Magic, and the results showed the products were contaminated with Salmonella. The products were manufactured in India and are not labeled for distribution in the United States.

All three products were imported to the United States and the products were distributed to retail stores in GA, NC, OH, MD, TN, TX, MS, FL, VA, NJ, and NY starting on March 16, 2023. Amin Trading LLC initiated a recall on June 1, 2023, after test results showed the products were contaminated with Salmonella. All remaining product on hand with the recalling firm was destroyed under FDA supervision. Additional details regarding the recall can be found in the FDA’s Enforcement Report.

The FDA has contacted the manufacturer of Maggi Masala ae Magic and they are investigating the situation. The foreign manufacturer of the two products, Everest Garam Masala and Everest Sambhar Masala, has been contacted and has issued a press release.

FDA Actions

The FDA is issuing this alert to warn consumers about the potential health risks associated with these products. The FDA is continuing its efforts to ensure these products are removed from the market. Additionally, the FDA has subjected the products to “Detention Without Physical Examination Of Food Products Due To The Presence Of Salmonella” under Import Alert #99-19.

Townsend Farms Inc. of Fairview, Oregon out of an abundance of caution is voluntarily recalling specific frozen fruit products linked to mango chunks supplied by SunOpta (Sunrise Growers) due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. Any consumers concerned about an illness should contact their physician.

The product was distributed to Kroger Stores in the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia; and under the following banners: Baker’s, Dillons, Food 4 Less, FoodsCo, Fry’s, Gerbes, Jay C, Mariano’s, Metro Market, Pay Less, Pick n’ Save, Ralphs, Ruler, and Smith’s from November 06, 2022 to March 16, 2023.

FMA International imported a total of one case from the affected lot.
Ottavi Tome Corse cheese was distributed in the state of Oregon to a specialty food distributor. The one case from the recalled lot has since been accounted for and has been subsequently destroyed. It was never sold to any retailers or restaurants.

This cheese is associated with an ongoing outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes infections in Europe.

The recall was the result of an ongoing recall and outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes in Europe associated with cheese from SAS Fromagerie Ottavi. FMA International was notified by the France manufacturer and immediately recalled the cheese imported to the United States.

Consumers who have purchased SAS Fromagerie Tome Corse should not consume or distribute the product and are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact Food Matters Again at 718-361-3183, Monday through Friday, from 9am to 5pm EST.

Minneapolis, Minn. – June 21, 2023 – SunOpta Inc’s subsidiary, Sunrise Growers Inc., has issued a voluntary recall of specific frozen fruit products linked to pineapple provided by a third-party supplier due to the potential for these products to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. Any consumers concerned about an illness should contact a physician.

USA – FDA Alerts Public of Expanding Strawberry Recall Over Concerns of Hepatitis A Exposure

Last Tuesday, the FDA announced that additional suppliers who provide strawberries to consumer stores such as Walmart and Costco have strawberries that were part of a voluntary recall. This has been an ongoing FDA investigation of hepatitis A infections linked to frozen organic strawberries imported from Baja California, Mexico.

According to the FDA, on June 12, the Willamette Valley Fruit Co. of Salem, Oregon, initiated a voluntary recall of select packages of frozen fruit products containing strawberries. Recalled products include Great Value Mixed Fruit 4-lb, Great Value Sliced Strawberries 4-lb, Great Value Antioxidant Fruit Blend 2-lb, Rader Farms Organic Fresh Start Smoothie Blend 48-oz. bag (each bag consists of six 8-oz packages), and Rader Farms Organic Berry Trio 3-lb.

The strawberries were sold to consumer stores Costco, Walmart, and HEB.

On June 7, 2023, Wawona Frozen Foods said it voluntarily recalled year-old packages of its Organic DayBreak Blend distributed to Costco Wholesale stores in Arizona, California, Colorado, Utah and Washington from April 15, 2022 to June 26, 2022.

In addition, California Splendor, Inc. of San Diego, California, has voluntarily recalled certain lots of 4-lb. bags of Kirkland Signature Frozen Organic Whole Strawberries that were sold at Costco stores in Los Angeles and Hawaii, and at two San Diego business centers. And Scenic Fruit Company of Gresham, Oregon, has performed a voluntarily recalled frozen organic strawberries, sold to Costco, Aldi, KeHE, Vital Choice Seafood, and PCC Community Markets in certain states and to Trader Joe’s nationwide.

The FDA also reported the latest update on the food-borne outbreak. As of June 14, there has been 9 total cases with 6 in Washington state, 2 in California, and 1 in Oregon. There has been 3 hospitalizations and no deaths. The last reported illness was April 12.

Cricket Creek Farm of Williamstown, MA is recalling 165 units of Sophelise cheese and 149 pounds of Tobasi cheese because it has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Sophelise and Tobasi were distributed in Massachusetts and New York through Wild Oats, Williamstown, MA; Provisions Williamstown, Williamstown, MA; McEnroe Organic Farm Market, Millerton, NY; New Lebanon Farmers Market; New Lebanon, NY, at restaurants, and farmers markets.

Sophelise product code: 087055 is a washed, pasteurized milk cheese with a soft rind and pinkish hue; the circular cheese measures 4 inches in diameter and roughly 1 inch tall. It is sold in semi-transparent packaging with a round blue label. Sophelise was distributed between March 29, 2023 and May 26, 2023.

Tobasi with a product label of 315, 341, 048 is a washed raw-milk cheese with an orange rind and creamy interior. When sold retail by Cricket Creek Farm, it is wrapped in clear packaging with a gray and orange label. When sold at retail stores, it is sold in small rectangular cuts. When sold wholesale, the cheese is a square format roughly 8”x8” and 1.25 inches tall. These batches of Tobasi were distributed between March 26, 2023, to May 26, 2023.

One hospitalization due to Listeria monocytogenes has been reported to date. Following this customer notification of illness, products purchased by this individual were tested by Biotrax Testing Laboratory and the current batch of Sophelise was determined to be positive for Listeria monocytogenes. The three batches of Tobasi are being recalled due to their proximity during storage to the exposed product.

Consumers who have purchased Sophelise, with product code 087055 or Tobasi cheese 315, 341, 048 on or after March 26, should not consume or distribute the product, and they are urged to return any remaining product to the place of purchase for a full refund.
