As of today, 6 cases of Legionnaires’ disease have been linked to the Sheraton Downtown Atlanta Hotel. Following news of the hotel’s shut down last week, the Georgia Department of Health announced its involvement in the outbreak investigation.

The hotel said in a public statement that it could be several weeks before it reopens as health officials investigate. Meanwhile, guests of the hotel were relocated to the Hilton not far from the property.

Georgia Department of Public Health states it doesn’t know if the guests contracted the disease while actually staying at the hotel. The health agency believes the water system of the hotel could be to blame. “They have a beautiful swimming pool and it’s shut down right now. They say they’re working on the filtration system. Maybe they haven’t made the linkage,” Georgia State Epidemiologist Cherie Drenzek said.

But the pool isn’t the only suspect. “Showerheads, hot tubs, perhaps even some outbreaks in the past have been associated with decorative fountains,” Georgia Department of Health epidemiologist Cherie Drenzek said.

UK – British reveal Salmonella fears over free trade deal with Australia

Australia could see an influx of British booze, bankers, cosmetics, cars, magazines, BBC TV shows and salmon under a post-Brexit trade deal with the United Kingdom, according to the results of a major consultation conducted by the British government released on Thursday.

The consultation also uncovered fears that an Australia-UK trade deal would lead to a spate of salmonella in Britain – with submissions linking our “lower standards of animal welfare” to “high rates of food poisoning” in Australia.

There was widespread concern among British industries that Australia would benefit more from dropping existing trade barriers.

UK – Scotland – Salmonella and E. coli behind six outbreaks each last year in Scotland

Food Safety News

Shiga-toxin producing E. coli and Salmonella both caused six outbreaks last year in Scotland, according to figures from Health Protection Scotland.

Data comes from ObSurv, a surveillance system established in 1996 for general outbreaks of infectious intestinal disease in the country. It does not include those where infection is thought to have been acquired overseas.

The six outbreaks of Shiga-toxin producing E. coli (STEC) in 2018 were due to three different serogroups; three were O157, two were O145 and one was O26. A total of 22 people were affected with three outbreaks recording five cases. A source was not found for any of the outbreaks.

The total is comparable to the number of outbreaks in 2013 to 2017, when there was an average of five and a range of three to nine per year.

In five outbreaks the main mode of transmission was foodborne and in the sixth it was a combination of foodborne and person to person.
