USA – NY cheese manufacturer pleads guilty for adulterated raw cheese linked to deadly Listeria outbreak

Food Safety News

Pursuit to a 16-page plea agreement that leaves little to the imagination, a former raw milk cheese manufacturer and the company he owned and managed pleaded guilty today to charges related to cheese that was linked to a deadly outbreak of listeriosis.

Johannes Vulto and his company, Vulto Creamery LLC, are scheduled for sentencing on July 9 at the U.S. Courthouse in Syracuse, NY. The maximum sentence for the single misdemeanor count is one year imprisonment, a fine of $250,000, and one year of supervised release plus a 5-year term of court supervision.

The plea agreement requires a payment of $100,000 from Vulto and a one-year supervised release to begin after any imprisonment.

USA – Washington creamery recalls raw milk because state tests found E. coli

Food Safety News

Cozy Vale Creamery of Tenino, WA, is advising consumers to discontinue consumption of their retail raw milk and cream products with the best-by dates of 02-18-24 through 02-29-24 and dispose of or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

These products, which were bottled in gallon, half-gallon, quart, and pint containers, were sold to customers, including retail stores, in Western Washington, according to a recall notice distributed by the dairy.

The advisory was initiated after routine sampling conducted by the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) revealed the presence of toxin-producing E. coli in retail raw whole milk from Feb, 05. Cozy Vale Creamery and WSDA continue to work jointly to address the source of the problem.

All other production dates are not impacted by this notice. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 360-481-4010.
