  • An outbreak advisory was issued for the outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes (ref #1214) linked to Queso Fresco and Cotija Cheese manufactured by Rizo Lopez Foods, Inc. On 2/5/2024, Rizo Lopez Foods, Inc. expanded their voluntary recall for Cotija Mexican Grating cheese to cover all dairy products manufactured in their Modesto, California, facility.
  • For the investigation of elevated lead levels in Cinnamon Applesauce Pouches (ref # 1198) the advisory was updated to include investigation updates.

USA – Update: Quaker Issues Revised Recall Notice With Additional Product Due to Possible Health Risk – Salmonella

January 31, 2024 – An additional granola bar has been added to the U.S. Recalled Products list as indicated on the first row of the chart below. This product was discontinued in September 2023 and has “Best Before” dates of February 10 or 11, 2024. Consumers should check their pantries and dispose of the product.

A previous press release was issued on 12/15/2023.

CHICAGO, Illinois – January 11, 2024 – The Quaker Oats Company today announced an expansion of the December 15, 2023, recall to include additional cereals, bars and snacks listed below because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The products listed below are sold throughout the 50 United States, Puerto Rico, Guam and Saipan. Consumers should check their pantries for any of the products listed below and dispose of them. Ocean Group Salmon And Tuna are being recalled for possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Because the recall notice was posted on the FDA’s Enforcement Reports Page instead of the usual recall page, there is no mention about whether or not any illnesses have been reported. FDA environmental sampling of the facility revealed the presence of the pathogen. The recalling firm is Ocean Group of Los Angeles, California.

Lidl Sweden is recalling Yayla Sucuk Garlic Sausage

Lidl Sweden is recalling the branded product Yayla Suckuk Garlic Sausage. The supplier discovered during a routine check that the product may contain toxin-producing Escherichia coli (E-coli). The product may therefore pose a health risk and should not be consumed. The recall only affects Yayla Sucuk Garlic Sausage with a best before date: 05-04-2024.

USA -Hepatitis A has its eye on a ShopRite in Philly

The Philadelphia Department of Public Health has recently confirmed that a person who works at the ShopRite at Oxford and Levick, located at 6301 Oxford St, Philadelphia, has acute Hepatitis A. The store is aware of the situation and is working collaboratively with the Health Department.
No additional ill people have been reported and no other stores are affected. While the risk of Hepatitis A infection is very low, the Health Department recommends that people who handled raw beef or pork or ate undercooked beef or pork purchased from the store’s meat counter between January 4th, 2024 and January 21st, 2024 receive Hepatitis A vaccine as soon as possible.

USA – Haleon Issues Voluntary Nationwide Recall of Robitussin Honey CF Max Day Adult and Robitussin Honey CF Max Night time Adult Products Due to Microbial Contamination

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – January 24, 2024 – Warren, NJ, Haleon is voluntarily recalling eight lots of Robitussin Honey CF Max Day Adult and Robitussin Honey CF Max Night time Adult to the consumer level. The product is being recalled due to microbial contamination.

In immunocompromised individuals, the use of the affected product could potentially result in severe or life-threatening adverse events such as fungemia or disseminated fungal infection. In non-immunocompromised consumers, the population most likely to use the product, life-threatening infections are not likely to occur. However, the occurrence of an infection that may necessitate medical intervention cannot be completely ruled out.

To date, Haleon has not received any reports of adverse events related to this recall.

Robitussin Honey CF Max Day and Nighttime are cough syrups indicated for the temporary relief of symptoms occurring with cold or flu, hay fever, or other respiratory allergies. This recall covers only the following lots:

UK – Mrs Kirkham’s cheese says tests show no trace of E. coli

A cheese producer that recalled products after a possible E. coli risk has said tests on 60 batches have shown no evidence of the bacteria.

Four types of Mrs Kirkham’s cheese were withdrawn in December as part of an investigation into cases involving a lesser-known strain of E. coli.

The Lancashire-based company said it had undergone a full dairy inspection.

An investigation to identify the cause of the outbreak by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) continues.

In a statement, Mrs Kirkham’s said the Preston company “closely follow controls to eliminate pathogen contamination and growth”.
