USA – Cyclospora cases top 1000 in the US, 36 states reporting cases

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 156 additional Cyclospora cases in the past month, putting the total cases since May 2021.

The 1,020 laboratory-confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis were reported in people who had no history of international travel during the 14-day period before illness onset. Cases have been reported in 37 jurisdictions, including 36 states and New York City.

Seventy people required hospitalization for their illness.

Norilsk is is a city in Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia, located above the Arctic Circle. Earlier this week, the head of the Rospotrebnadzor department for the Krasnoyarsk Territory Dmitry Goryaev reported an  Yersinia enterocolitica outbreak affecting 44 workers of Velesstroy LLC in Norilsk.

“As part of the sanitary and epidemiological investigation, according to the results of laboratory tests, the pathogen that causes intestinal yersiniosis, Yersinia enterocolitica, was identified in the patients,” he noted.

Earlier, the regional Rospotrebnadzor reported on the identification of violations of the requirements of sanitary legislation in the company canteen.

Research – USA – Novel Outbreak-Associated Food Vehicles, United States

Novel outbreak-associated food vehicles (i.e., foods not implicated in past outbreaks) can emerge as a result of evolving pathogens and changing consumption trends. To identify these foods, we examined data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Foodborne Disease Outbreak Surveillance System and found 14,216 reported outbreaks with information on implicated foods. We compared foods implicated in outbreaks during 2007–2016 with those implicated in outbreaks during 1973–2006. We identified 28 novel food vehicles, of which the most common types were fish, nuts, fruits, and vegetables; one third were imported. Compared with other outbreaks, those associated with novel food vehicles were more likely to involve illnesses in multiple states and food recalls and were larger in terms of cases, hospitalizations, and deaths. Two thirds of novel foods did not require cooking after purchase. Prevention efforts targeting novel foods cannot rely solely on consumer education but require industry preventive measures.

USA – More patients identified in hepatitis A outbreak linked to restaurants

At least three people have been admitted to hospitals in a growing outbreak of hepatitis A linked to restaurants in Virginia.

There are now 14 people confirmed infected, according to state health officials. Four of those patients are new since the outbreak was initially reported on Sept. 24. 

Additional patients are highly likely to be identified. It takes 15 to 50 days for hepatitis A symptoms to develop, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The infected people ate at three Famous Anthony’s restaurants, according to the Virginia Department of Health. Cynthia Morrow from the Roanoke City and Alleghany Health Districts provided an update on the outbreak earlier this week.

Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Texas and Virginia hardest hit.

The CDC reports today that since the last update on September 23, 2021, 140 more people were added to this outbreak. As of September 29, 2021, 419 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Oranienburg have been reported from 35 states. Illnesses started on dates ranging from June 19, 2021, to September 14, 2021.

The Monroe County Department of Public Health has determined norovirus  is likely responsible for recent illnesses on Rochester Institute of Technology’s (RIT) Henrietta campus.

The vast majority of cases were resolved within 24-36 hours without medical treatment. However, some RIT students did need care in the Student Health Center, and a few received care in a local emergency department.

In response, the school has increased deep cleaning and sanitization efforts on high-touch surfaces in residence halls, dining areas, restrooms, and other spaces across campus.

USA – Is Salmonella Oranienburg Outbreak Connected to Onions or Limes?

The rapidly expanding Salmonella Oranienburg outbreak has not yet been definitively solved by the FDA or CDC, but there are clues in the latest investigation information. On Friday, September 24, 2021, the CDC said that they found the outbreak strain in a takeout condiment cup that contained cilantro, onion, and lime. Is the Salmonella Oranienburg outbreak connected to onions or lime?

As of August 28, 31 people have been confirmed infected with Salmonella Coeln. Whole genome sequencing (analysis of the bacterium’s genome) has shown that the disease cases carry the same strain of Salmonella Coeln and are thus suspected of having been infected by a common source of infection. The cases, which are aged 0-85 years (median = 28 years), are resident in twelve different regions in Sweden and 18 (58 percent) of the patients are men. Affected infection control units, municipalities and County Administrative Boards, together with the National Food Administration and the Swedish Public Health Agency, are investigating the outbreak to identify the source of infection that is suspected to be a food with a wide distribution in Sweden.
