USA – Outbreak of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) reported in relation to Oregon mussels

An outbreak of paralytic shellfish poisoning that has sickened at least 20 people has prompted health officials to urge those who harvested mussels from a stretch of Oregon’s coast since Saturday to discard the mollusks.

Officials at the Oregon Health Authority’s Public Health Division also recommend people who experience any symptoms of paralytic shellfish poisoning, such as numbness of the mouth and lips, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, and in severe cases, shortness of breath or irregular heartbeat, to immediately contact a health care provider. Advice is also available by calling the Oregon Poison Center at 800-222-1222.

Recall notices External Link Disclaimer have been posted related to JBR’s recall of certain frozen half-shell oysters due to illnesses in Utah associated with the consumption of such oysters.

JJBR (KR-15-SP) Tongyeong, Republic of Korea (ROK) is recalling frozen half-shell oysters with lot number B231227 because they may be contaminated with norovirus. The recalled oysters were harvested from ROK Designated Area No. 1 on 12/27/2023. They were processed by JBR (KR-15-SP) in Tongyeong, ROK on 12/28/2023 as frozen half-shell oysters, with lot number B231227. These oysters were distributed by Khee Trading, Inc. (Compton, CA), which is also recalling these oysters.

On 5/15/2024, JC Foods, Inc., of Salt Lake City, UT initiated a voluntary recall of frozen half shell oysters, lot number B231227, that had been distributed to their retail customers in Utah.

Retailers should not serve or sell, and consumers should not eat frozen half-shell oysters with lot number B231227 that were processed by JBR of ROK on 12/28/2023, and distributed to restaurants and retailers in California, Colorado, Nevada, New Jersey, and Utah. Additional distribution may have occurred, and the states are continuing to conduct trace forward investigations. The FDA is assisting with and coordinating interstate notification efforts as a result of the states’ investigations.

Irvington Seafood of Irvington, AL, is recalling its 1 lb. packages of “Crabmeat: Jumbo, Lump, Finger, and Claw meat” because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women

The recalled “Crabmeat: Jumbo, Lump, Finger, and Claw meat” were distributed to distributors located in Alabama, and Mississippi. Products may end up in retail seafood markets or restaurants.

The product comes in a 1 lb. tubs, package marked with license number AL 111-C with the company name “Irvington Seafood.”

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.

Kevin Sakprasit received Finish Product Testing results on May 17, 2024, at 4:31pm Central from EMSL Analytical, Inc. Crabmeat was processed on May 12, 2024, Batch #133 tested positive for L. monocytogenes. 94 samples were taken on May 13, 2024: 23 samples of Jumbo, 24 samples of Lump, 24 samples of Fingers, and 23 samples of Claw meat. Based on the lab report, 12 samples of Claw meat, and 2 samples of Fingers that were taken came back positive. We have decided to do a voluntary recall to ensure the safety of our consumers.

The production of the product has been suspended while the FDA and the company continue to investigate the source of the problem.

Consumers who have purchased 1 lb. packages of “Crabmeat” are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 251-610-4159 central between the hours of 8:00am – 5:00pm.

USA – Update to Palmer Candy Company Recall of White Confectionary Products Because of Possible Health Risk – Salmonella

The firm previously issued a public notification on 05/06/2024. The firm is issuing this public notification to include additional best by dates and products.

This press release was updated to include additional best by dates of the products:

Caramel Swirl Pretzels 4oz
Cookies & Cream Yummy Chow 14#
Munchy Medley 4oz
Peanut Butter Snack Mix 12oz
Vanilla Yogurt Covered Pretzels 10oz
Zebra Fudge Cookies 7oz

and to include the following two items:

Patriotic White Fudge Cookies 13.5oz
Drizzled Caramel Corn 5oz and 12oz

The recalled confectionary items were distributed nationwide in Walmart, HyVee, Target, Dollar General, and to distributors in Alabama, California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

The product comes in a variety of retail packaging like bags, pouches and tubs.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.

Palmer Candy was notified by its liquid coating supplier that there was a potential for contamination with salmonella from an ingredient that was potentially contaminated from one of their suppliers.

Production of the product has been suspended while FDA and the company continue their investigation as to the source of the problem.

Consumers who have purchased White coated confectionary items manufactured by Palmer Candy Company are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

USA – Riced cauliflower recalled in Texas after testing finds Listeria monocytogenes

CN Frozen Foods, Inc. of Coral Gables, FL is recalling Sysco Classic Riced Cauliflower after the product tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.

According to the details posted online by the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), the recall was initiated on April 27, 2024 and is ongoing.

The recalled product was sold in Texas.

Western Mixers Produce & Nuts, Inc. of Ontario, CA is recalling Yogurt Covered Pretzels, because the yogurt coating has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

Yogurt Covered Pretzels was distributed in the State of California, through Thorp Fruit, Down Home Goods, Smart & Final, Gelson’s retail stores.

The recall was as the result of a routine sampling program by the source supplier of the yogurt coating, which revealed that the finished products contained the bacteria. The company has ceased the production and distribution of the product as FDA and the company continue their investigation as to what caused the problem.
