USA – Deli take-out in Seattle blamed for unidentified gastrointestinal illnesses

Public Health is investigating an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness with diarrhea, vomiting, body aches, headaches, and fevers associated with a takeout meal from Saigon Vietnam Deli on July 25, 2020. A specific food or drink item that might have caused the illnesses has not been identified. Saigon Vietnam Deli is located  at1200 S Jackson Street in Seattle.

Pubic Health serves the Seattle-King County area of Washington State.

Since Aug. 3, 2020, Public Health learned about 8 people with a gastrointestinal illness who reported eating takeout food together from Saigon Vietnam Deli on July 25, 2020. Other food was also ordered for takeout from another food establishment, but since only half of the ill people ate the food from the second restaurant, it is unlikely the source of illnesses.

Public Health hasn’t identified any ill employees.

Taiwan – Over 100 people fall ill with suspected food poisoning at Yilan hotel

Taipei, Aug. 6 (CNA) More than 100 people who dined at a hotel buffet in Yilan County have fallen ill with suspected food poisoning, but source of the contamination has not yet been identified, the county’s Public Health Bureau said Thursday.

As of 3:30 p.m., 121 visitors who had eaten at Hotel Royal Chiao Hsi had reported symptoms of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, with 77 of them seeking medical attention, the bureau said.

The problem was first reported Aug. 1 by a group of hotel guests on a company trip, but public health officials were not informed until three days later, according to the bureau.

After an inspection of the hotel restaurant on Aug. 4, the public health officials sent kitchen utensils and water samples to the Food and Drug Administration for testing, the bureau said, adding that the results will become available in few days’ time.

Jordan – One child dead, 700 sick due to mass food poisoning in Jordan restaurant

A five-year-old child is dead and 700 other people have been hospitalized in Jordan with mass food poisoning after eating shawarma at a restaurant in the town of Ain al-Basha, north of the capital Amman, the Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday.

Investigations revealed that the meat and chicken shawarma had been prepared without using a refrigeration unit in an “unhealthy environment and without adhering to the health requirements and the minimum levels of general safety,” the official Jordan News Agency reported citing a ministry press release.

Laboratory tests also found that bacteria in meat and poultry products at the restaurant, according to the ministry’s statement.

USA – Unidentified Salmonella Newport Outbreak Sickens 125 in 15 States

An unidentified Salmonella Newport outbreak has sickened at least 125 people in 15 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Twenty-four people have been hospitalized because they are so sick. This is the way foodborne illness outbreaks sometimes start; the government publicizes it, and more people come forward who may have information that helps solve it.

Vietnam – Over 100 workers hospitalised because of food poisoning

At 7 pm on July 20, Dong Nai General Hospital received dozens of patients who are workers of Great Kingdom Company at Giang Dien Industrial Park, Trang Bom District. The patients suffered from dizziness and nausea. According to the workers, they had symptoms after dinner and starting the extra shift.

All workers are in stable condition. The doctors are still checking their condition, carrying out ultrasound tests and intravenous infusion to find the most suitable treatment.

Luong Ngoc Hoi, deputy director of Great Kingdom Company, said, “The dinner for 1,600 workers from two factories was held at 4 pm at our cafeteria. There were fried fish, boiled eggs, cabbage, spinach and sponge gourd.But after dinner, the workers at one factory showed symptoms of food poisoning. We sent 50 of them to Shing Mark Hospital and 50 to Dong Nai General Hospital.”

The origin wa bagged romaine lettuce. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case. Vegetables and fresh fruit have become a real headache for food safety experts.

Today in the United States, fresh vegetables are the largest source of food poisoning. In Europe, the figures are not so pristine, but the bacteria and viruses associated with this type of food also are to blame for the vast majority of poisonings. We are facing a real danger for food safety: salads.

India -76 people from Andhra’s Visakha tribal area hospitalised with food poisoning

At least 76 residents of a village in the Paderu ITDA (Integrated Tribal Development Agency) limits suffered food poisoning on Wednesday after consuming contaminated meat. The incident occurred in Magatapalem village of Gaduturu panchayat, in Gangaraju Madugula mandal of the Paderu Agency region.

While it was ascertained that the meat was contaminated, he said that it was unclear whether it was because of the way the cow died, or because of the cooking process.

Paderu MLA Bhagyalakshmi Kottagulli, who visited the patients at the hospital, told the media that the exact cause of the food-borne illness was yet to be determined. “They unknowingly ate polluted food. We are requesting people to be careful with their health.”

 

 

Taiwan – Taiwan records 6,944 food poisoning cases in 2019, marking 23-year high

Taiwan recorded 6,944 instances of food poisoning last year, which marked a 23-year high, according to numbers released by the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

In 2019, there were 503 food poisoning incidents, leading to 6,944 people becoming ill, compared to 2018 when 398 cases caused 4,616 people to get sick, according to government figures cited by Liberty Times. Last year’s number of cases was also the second-highest since the country started keeping food poisoning records in 1981.

The highest number occurred in 1997. when 7,235 people were affected by food poisoning.

Among last year’s cases, 4,000 people came down with food poisoning while at school. Most of these were linked to the large group meals served during lunchtime.

Syria – Dozens hit by food poisoning in Idlib

More than 50 Syrian families at the Al-Rayyan camp in the country’s northern city of Idlib have been poisoned by packaged meals distributed by an aid organisation working in the area.

Local media quoted the camp director, Abdo Al-Ali, as saying that the victims had included “women and children”, adding that they were receiving medical treatment at the hospitals in the area.

In May, dozens of Syrian families were reported to have been poisoned after eating breakfast distributed by an organisation in a refugee camp located in Idlib’s countryside of Deir Hassan. Others were also poisoned in June after eating takeaway meals from a restaurant in the city.

Idlib is the last opposition stronghold in Syria where millions now live after fleeing from their homes in the war-torn country.
