Kenya – Kebs seizes 3,000 bags of rice contaminated with aflatoxin

The Star

The Kenya Bureau of Standards has seized 3000 bags of rice in Mombasa which it says is contaminated with aflatoxin.

Kebs said on Monday that the consignment was packaged in 25 kg bags.

“We seized the rice in Shimanzi and found it to be contaminated with a high aflatoxin content,” they said.

The rice, they said, was imported into the country.

Aflatoxin, according to the Center for Disease Control, is a fungal toxin that commonly contaminates maize and other types of crops including legumes such as peanuts.

“The contamination happens during production, harvest, storage or processing,” the centre says.

Exposure to aflatoxin is known to cause both chronic and acute hepatocellular injury.

“In Kenya, acute aflatoxin poisoning results in liver failure and death in up to 40 per cent of cases,” they say.

Research – Mycotoxins and Essential Oils—From a Meat Industry Hazard to a Possible Solution: A Brief Review

MDPI

The preservation of food supplies has been humankind’s priority since ancient times, and it is arguably more relevant today than ever before. Food sustainability and safety have been heavily prioritized by consumers, producers, and government entities alike. In this regard, filamentous fungi have always been a health hazard due to their contamination of the food substrate with mycotoxins. Additionally, mycotoxins are proven resilient to technological processing. This study aims to identify the main mycotoxins that may occur in the meat and meat products “Farm to Fork” chain, along with their effect on the consumers’ health, and also to identify effective methods of prevention through the use of essential oils (EO). At the same time, the antifungal and antimycotoxigenic potential of essential oils was considered in order to provide an overview of the subject. Targeting the main ways of meat products’ contamination, the use of essential oils with proven in vitro or in situ efficacy against certain fungal species can be an effective alternative if all the associated challenges are addressed (e.g., application methods, suitability for certain products, toxicity). View Full-Text

Research – The underestimated risk of mycotoxins in dairy cows

All About Feed

It is a myth that rumen microbial activity allows dairy cows to handle mycotoxin toxicity completely. A closer look at rumen degradation capability shows that this is not the case. Therefore, a mitigation strategy should be holistic, practical and beyond binding.

Risk, impact, and diagnostics

A complex and diverse Total Mixed Ration (TMR) poses multiple mycotoxin toxicity challenges. Although rumen microbes can reduce the toxicity of some mycotoxins, not all mycotoxins are equally degraded in the rumen. In high-yielding dairy cows high-starch diets can compromise the detoxification capacity of rumen microbes. For some mycotoxins, such as zearalenone (ZEN), rumen degradation may increase the toxicity. Furthermore, extended periods of exposure to low levels of multiple mycotoxins may lead to chronic toxicity, an increasing issue that is notoriously difficult to diagnose at an early stage.

Mycotoxins can threaten dairy cows’ health, rumen function, feed intake, milk yield, milk quality, lameness, and reproductive abilities. Many “mouldy silage syndrome” cases in the field have shown incidences of increased somatic cell counts, undigested faecal feed particles, laminitis, mastitis and ruminitis cases. Cases of reproductive challenges and vaccination failures have been reported with multiple mycotoxins in TMR.
