Fayette Mall announced it is closing the food court as a result of the reported illnesses out of an abundance of caution. The health department recommended it closed.

The health department says more than 150 reports of illnesses are known at this time, but it is unsure what the actual cause of the illness is. Officials believe it is related to a stomach bug because of the symptoms.

“These are folks who got sick relatively quickly after eating there,” health department commissioner Dr. Kraig Humbaugh said.

GATLINBURG, Tenn. (WATE) – The Tennessee Department of Health says local testing has confirmed E.coli in well water at a zip line attraction in Sevier County following an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness among visitors.

The health department says testing showed E. coli and total coliforms in well water at CLIMB Works Zipline Canopy Tour. More testing is underway in Nashville.

Total coliforms include bacteria that are found in the soil, in water that has been influenced by surface water, and in human or animal waste. Fecal coliforms are the group of the total coliforms that are considered to be present specifically in the gut and feces of warm-blooded animals.

The state department of health says nearly 3,000 surveys were sent out to people who had booked zip line tours online with CLIMB Works since mid-June. As of Tuesday morning, 808 people had responded with 548 people from multiple states reporting illness, including diarrhea and vomiting.

The Knox County Health Department (KCHD) is concluding its investigation into a cluster of Escherichia coli (E. coli) O157 infections. Fifteen confirmed cases of E. coli O157 were reported to KCHD recently. All cases were among children, nine were hospitalized and seven developed a complication of the infection called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). Of the children who were hospitalized, one remains in fair condition at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital. Lab results from the Tennessee Department of Health have confirmed two different strains of E. coli O157 caused the children to become ill.

USA – Officials confirm Norovirus as cause of illnesses at Highlands County summer camp

CBS12 Norovirus Food Safety kswfoodworld

Norovirus has been found as the cause of illnesses that sent dozens of children and adults to the hospital last week, the Florida Health Department of Highlands County said.

Thirty-six people were sickened at Camp Cloverleaf last Thursday after swimming in a nearby lake.

Norovirus is a highly contagious gastrointestinal illness that is easily exchanged from person-to-person, according to FDOH. It can spread rapidly in closed environments, like a summer camp. People can become sick by eating or drinking contaminated food or liquids, touching surfaces or objects that are contaminated by the virus and then placing their hand in their mouth or by direct contact with an infected person.

USA – Multistate Outbreak of Burkholderia cepacia Complex Infections Associated with the Use of Medline Remedy Essentials No-Rinse Cleaning Foam

uuCDC

Update May 21, 2018

CDC is collaborating with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), state and local health departments, and healthcare facilities to investigate a recent outbreak of Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc) infections. As of May 21, 2018, CDC confirmed 15 cases of Bcc infections associated with use of Medline (Northfield, IL) Remedy Essentials No-Rinse Cleansing Foam. Seven infections were in patients in Pennsylvania, seven were in California, and one was in New Jersey. These patients were already hospitalized for acute conditions and acquired the infections while hospitalized.

As of May 8, 2018 FDA is advising health professionals and consumers to avoid using all lots of Medline Remedy Essentials No-Rinse Cleansing foam, manufactured by Shadow Holdings dba Bocchi Laboratories (Santa Clarita, CA), as these products might be contaminated with Bcc. Shadow Holdings dba Bocchi Laboratories has recalled certain lots of the product.

The FDA is investigating this matter further to determine whether any additional products or lots may present a risk to consumers.

B. cepacia complex bacteria are environmental pathogens. Infections can be transmitted through infection control lapses, including indirect contact via environmental surfaces. Person-to-person transmission is possible but less common. B. cepacia complex bacteria can grow in aqueous environments, can exhibit resistance to preservatives, and can cause contamination of liquid medications or other liquid products. These factors have led to previous healthcare-associated outbreaks of B. cepacia complex. For additional information on B. cepacia complex bacteria please visit: Burkholderia cepacia in Healthcare Settings(https://www.cdc.gov/hai/organisms/bcepacia.html).

Report adverse reactions or quality problems experienced with the use of this product to the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program either online, by regular mail or by fax.

Israel – Twenty soldiers were poisoned in Jerusalem – Salmonella

Siva Telegram

20 IDF soldiers serving in different units, were poisoned while staying in the Beit Ha-Hayal in Jerusalem last week.

Soldiers arrived in Jerusalem to participate in the seminar of the organization for the security fence through which they were called.

We are talking about food poisoning, presumably with Salmonella. The soldiers return to their units, were suffering from diarrhoea, fever and vomiting. Some of the victims were placed in detention centers.

One of the instructors of the seminar starting to receive reports of all new cases of the disease, realized that the cause must be one, and remembered the complaints of the soldiers the “disgusting food” and the “stinking fish.”

The administration of the Beit Ha-Hayal said that the results of the inspection of Salmonella in the kitchen of the institution is not discovered. However, the kitchen is closed, the contractor who supplied the food suspended, and the administration is looking for a new contractor.

Information – Will Washing Romaine Lettuce Remove E. coli O157:H7?

Food Poisoning Bulletin

Consumers are asking questions about this outbreak; namely, how can they protect themselves and their families? One of the questions is: will washing romaine lettuce and other produce eliminate the pathogenic bacteria?

The answer is, unfortunately, no. There are several reasons for this.

First, it only takes 10 Shiga toxin-producing E. coli bacteria to make a person very sick. That tiny amount is invisible to the eye. Washing romaine lettuce will not remove all the bacteria from microscopic surface of every leaf. Experts say that washing romaine lettuce and other produce can only reduce the number of bacteria that may be present, not completely eliminate them.

Second, pathogenic bacteria such as E. coli O157:H7 can form biofilms. These bacteria tend to cluster in small clumps so they can communicate with each other and protect each other. The bacteria produce a matrix made up of proteins, polysaccharides, and nucleic acids. The matrix is very dense and protects the bacteria from cleaning agents. It also protects the bacteria from antibiotics, and even desiccation. A simple rinse with water or a cleaning solution may not penetrate that biofilm.

And finally, the deeply crenelated surface of leafy greens provides lots of places for bacteria to hide. The same is true for other types of produce, especially cantaloupe. And, if there are tiny tears, bruises, or rips in the lettuce leaf, the bacteria can actually get inside. No amount of washing any kind of produce can reach the bacteria then.

The only thing that will kill E. coli bacteria is heat; the food must be heated to 160°F. There are very few recipes that call for cooked romaine lettuce. Grilling romaine lettuce halves will not increase the temperature enough to kill any bacteria that may be present.

Canada – At least 40 sick linked to 2 Canadian oyster farms – Norovirus

Barf Blog

Two B.C. Vancouver Island oyster farms have been closed following an outbreak of norovirus associated with eating the raw shellfish.

The B.C. Centre for Disease Control says about 40 cases of acute gastrointestinal illness have been connected to the consumption of raw oysters since March. Testing has confirmed some of the cases were norovirus.

Federal officials with Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) confirmed the affected farms are located on the east coast of Vancouver Island at Deep Bay and Denman Island.

While the two farms are no longer harvesting oysters for consumption, no recall of oysters has been issued by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
