Danger  : Presence of Listeria monocytogenes

Listeria monocytogenes can cause fever, headache and gastroenteritis. Vulnerable people such as immunocompromised and elderly people and young children may present with neurological symptoms due to meningitis. Pregnant women should also be especially alert to these symptoms. Gastroenteritis can appear between a few hours and 3 days after consumption, while neurological symptoms can only appear after 3 months. People who have consumed these products and have these symptoms are invited to consult a doctor and report this consumption to him.

The below batches of various brands of popcorn kernels are being recalled due to elevated levels of aflatoxin. Recall notices will be displayed at point-of-sale in stores supplied with the implicated batches.

Nature Of Danger:

Aflatoxin is one of a group of a naturally occurring chemicals (mycotoxins) produced by certain moulds. They can grow on a variety of different crops and foodstuffs, often under warm and humid conditions.

Mycotoxins can cause a variety of adverse health effects in humans including cancer (some are genotoxic), kidney and liver damage, gastrointestinal disturbances, reproductive disorders, or suppression of the immune system. Mycotoxins are naturally occurring, so their presence in foods cannot be completely avoided.

Action Required:

Manufacturers, wholesalers, distributors, caterers & retailers:

Retailers are requested to remove the implicated batches from sale and display recall notices at point-of-sale.

Consumers:

Consumers are advised not to eat the implicated batches.

In agreement with the FASFC, Pit & Pit is withdrawing the Pit & Pit brand’s “Popcorn Maize” product from sale and recalling it from consumers because of an excessively high aflatoxin content.

Pit & Pit asks its customers not to consume this product and to return it. A free return label can be requested by sending an email with the photo of the label to help@pit-pit.com. Upon receipt of the return, the product will be refunded.

Finland – Mold toxins in children’s oat bars – Ochratoxin A

Muru Baby Food Oy has announced a recall concerning two children’s oat bars manufactured by the company:

  • Muru Baby organic oat bar raspberry 20g, best before 24/01/2024
  • Muru Baby organic oat bar carrot 20g, best before 23/01/2024

The recall is due to the fact that ochratoxin A has been detected in the products of those dates above the limit allowed for children’s food. The amount found does not pose an acute health hazard, but prolonged exposure to high concentrations of ochratoxin A may cause adverse effects.
