Danger  : Clostridium botulinum (agent responsible for botulism)

Botulism is a rare disease that most often results from the consumption of contaminated food containing botulinum toxin produced by Clostridium botulinum . This toxin develops in particular in canned or home-made or artisanal delicatessen products for which the sterilization process has not been mastered. Symptoms generally appear 12 to 72 hours after ingestion of contaminated food, but they can develop earlier or later (2 hours to 10 days). Botulinum poisoning is characterized by neurological signs: sensation of blurred vision, drooping eyelids, speech disorders, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, muscle weakness. Digestive signs (constipation, vomiting, diarrhea) often accompany neurological signs.

Distribution in Luxembourg commerce is not known to date.

On the other hand, this product was able to be brought back to Luxembourg after having been purchased in France .

Cans of this pesto were sold at the following events (Indre et Loire department):

QUEBEC CITY , Sept. 10 , 2024 /CNW/ – The Ministère de l’Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l’Alimentation (MAPAQ), in collaboration with the Food Inspection Division of the City of Montreal and Boulangerie Bagels on Greene Ltd., located at 4160, rue Sainte-Catherine Ouest, in Montreal, is warning the public not to consume the product indicated in the table below, as this food may contain the bacteria Bacillus cereus .

The product that is the subject of this warning was offered for sale until September 10, 2024, and only at the establishment designated above. The product was packaged in a clear plastic container. It was reportedly sold refrigerated or frozen.

The operator is recalling the product in question. It has agreed with the MAPAQ and the Food Inspection Division of the City of Montreal to issue this warning as a precautionary measure. In addition, people who have this product in their possession are advised not to consume it. They must return it to the establishment where they purchased it or throw it away. Even if the product in question does not show any signs of alteration or suspicious odor, its consumption may represent a health risk.

Symptoms of Bacillus cereus poisoning can occur 1.5 to 5 hours after consuming the contaminated food and include nausea and vomiting. However, they can also appear 8 to 16 hours after consuming the food. In this case, the main symptoms are nausea, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and sometimes vomiting. Symptoms usually disappear within 24 hours.

It should be noted that no cases of illness associated with the consumption of this food have been reported to MAPAQ to date.

France – Pesto linked to five botulism cases in France

Several people are suspected to have developed botulism after eating pesto in France.

The Centre-Val-de-Loire Regional Health Agency received reports of five probable cases of botulism following a family meal.

Sick people ate wild garlic pesto from the “O Ptits Oignons” brand. The five cases are currently hospitalized in an intensive care unit.

Hong Kong – Group of mainland Chinese tourists taken to hospital in Hong Kong after suffering suspected food poisoning

Health authorities have ordered a restaurant in Hong Kong to suspend business and undergo cleaning after mainland Chinese tourists who dined there were suspected of having suffered food poisoning

Police said they received a report at 12.33pm on Tuesday that 11 people had fallen ill in To Kwa Wan and were later sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Staff members from the centre and the Centre for Food Safety inspected the restaurant where they had dinner and took away samples for laboratory testing.

Authorities also ordered the restaurant to suspend operations and carry out cleaning to improve the food preparation process.

Aflatoxins are mycotoxins produced by certain species of  Aspergillus moulds  that thrive when the temperature and humidity of the food are high. Aflatoxins are considered genotoxic and carcinogenic by the European Food Safety Authority and can be dangerous at high and repeated consumption.

Morocco – Mass Food Poisoning in Casablanca: 63 Gravely Affected from Fast-Food Sandwich

Rabat – Around 35 people were initially victims of massive food poisoning on Wednesday evening in Casablanca after consuming a sandwich at a fast-food restaurant in the Sabata neighborhood.

However, the regional hospital of Ben M’sik told SNRTNews today that the victim count reached 63 by yesterday evening.

An alert was raised at the emergency room of Sidi Othmane Hospital in Ben M’Sik after 30 individuals exhibiting symptoms of food poisoning were admitted early Thursday morning, according to reports.

The victims had eaten a sandwich called “khobza aajiba” or “wonder bread,” which is a specialty of the fast-food restaurant.

This sandwich mainly consists of eggs, potatoes, rice, and other ingredients, which are often not fresh and can result in unsanitary and unhygienic conditions.
