Denmark Update – Outbreak of invasive Listeria infection sequence type 1607

The Statens Serum Institut is currently investigating a protracted disease outbreak with Listeria monocytogenes in collaboration with the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration and the Norwegian Food Institute DTU

A total of 17 people have been infected with the same type of listeria since the summer of 2019 (figure 1). The patients are 13 women and 4 men with a median age of 73 years, with one patient in their 20s and four in their 80s. The patients live throughout the country (table 1). All have been hospitalized. Two people have died within 30 days of detection of the infection.

The outbreaks are handled by the Central Outbreak Group, which consists of SSI, the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration and the DTU Food Institute. SSI stands for whole-genome sequencing of patients’ listeria isolates and interviews with patients or relatives with a view to identifying a possible source of infection. Since there are also people abroad who have become ill with listeria sequence type 1607, the international authorities are working on an international overview.

Belgium – Poultry logs from the Fiers brand – Salmonella

In agreement with the FASFC, Fiers NV is withdrawing Fiers brand poultry logs from sale and recalling them from consumers due to the possible presence of Salmonella.

Fiers NV asks its customers not to consume this product and to return it to the point of sale where it was purchased, where it will be refunded.

New Zealand – Public health warning: shellfish biotoxin warning for Marlborough – PSP

New Zealand Food Safety is advising the public not to collect or consume shellfish gathered from the inner Queen Charlotte Sound, as well as near Collingwood in Golden Bay, due to the presence of high levels of paralytic shellfish toxins.

Routine tests on mussels from near Waikawa have shown levels of paralytic shellfish toxins 3 times higher than the safe limit. The warning extends from Anakiwa, out to West Head and Dieffenbach Point.

In addition to the Queen Charlotte Sound warning, the levels of paralytic shellfish toxins in mussels farmed near Collingwood have risen in recent weeks and are nearly at the safe limit. Commercial harvesting from the mussel farms have stopped and the public are warned that shellfish gathered from the shore could also have elevated levels of toxins.

QUEBEC CITY , April 24, 2024 /CNW/ – The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPAQ), in collaboration with the Food Inspection Division of the City of Montreal and the company Épicerie Basta , located at 505, rue Rachel Est, in Montreal, advises the population not to consume the products indicated in the table below, because they have not been prepared and packaged to ensure their safety. In fact, these products could promote the proliferation of the bacteria  Clostridium botulinum .

The operator is voluntarily recalling the products in question. He agreed with MAPAQ and the Food Inspection Division of the City of Montreal to broadcast this warning as a precautionary measure. Additionally, people who have one of these products in their possession are advised not to consume it. They must return it to the establishment where they purchased it or throw it away.

Even if the affected products do not show signs of spoilage or suspicious odor, they could be contaminated with the bacteria  Clostridium botulinum . Foods contaminated with the toxin of this bacteria can cause, when ingested, the following symptoms: facial paralysis, unresponsive or fixed pupils, difficulty swallowing, drooping eyelids, vision and speech problems. In severe cases, the disease can cause death.

It should be noted that no cases of illness associated with the consumption of these foods have been reported to MAPAQ to date.

The European Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed has issued a notification
on the recall of various Fromagerie Blanc’s raw milk goat cheese products due to
possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes.
As the implicated products were imported into Singapore, the Singapore Food
Agency has directed the importer, Symphony W&C Pte Ltd, to recall the products. The
recall is ongoing.
