USA – Recalls of hazardous meat and poultry up 83 percent since 2013, report finds

CBS

Recalls of hazardous meat and poultry have gone up by more than 80 percent in the last six years, according to a new report out Thursday morning. One in six Americans get sick every year from eating contaminated food leading to at least 3,000 deaths per year – 450 from salmonella alone.

“Something is rotten in our slaughterhouses and our fields, and so common sense protections from farm to fork can help prevent that,” said Adam Garber, a researcher for the U.S. Public Interest Research Group, the organization behind the report.

It found recalls of produce and processed food by the FDA increased about two percent from 2013 to 2018 and the most hazardous meat and poultry recalls by the USDA increased by 83 percent.

The report recommends the FDA require testing “water used for irrigation or watering of produce for hazardous pathogens” like E. coli and for meat and poultry products, declare when “antibiotic resistant strains of salmonella as an adulterant” are found.

Food Safety News Vibrio

California officials have closed some commercial shellfish farming areas while they investigate an outbreak of norovirus that has sickened at least 44 people who reported eating raw oysters from Hog Island Oysters.

The company agreed to recall its “Sweetwater” and “Atlantic” oysters from a total of more than 40 restaurants and retailers in California, according to a notice posted by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). The company did not appear to have any information about the recall or illnesses on its website as of last night.

A spokesperson for the CDPH told Food Safety News that the source of the highly contagious norovirus had not been determined as of yesterday afternoon. It has, however, been confirmed that norovirus is responsible for the illnesses, as opposed to other foodborne pathogens.

USA – Dade City caterer’s uncooked turkey leaves 200-plus ill

The Ledger

LAKELAND — A foodborne illness affecting more than 200 people at a Watson Clinic Christmas party was linked to a turkey that wasn’t fully cooked, according to an investigation.

Some people who ate the turkey suffered nausea, vomiting and diarrhea about six hours after eating.

The catering company that brought the turkey was Steph’s Southern Soul Restaurant of Dade City. The owner of the restaurant declined comment Friday.

The Florida Department of Health in Pasco County and the Department of Business and Professional Regulation found that the restaurant was out of compliance in several areas during an inquiry, said Nicole Riley, a spokeswoman with the Department of Health in Polk County.

The restaurant was closed for 24 hours to fix the issues, Riley said.

Polk’s Department of Health analyzed food and human specimens and conducted an epidemiological investigation by survey and phone of both well and sick employees who attended the luncheon. Riley said the exact foodborne pathogen was still unclear.

UK and Ireland -Norovirus oyster outbreak

Food Safety News

Authorities in the United Kingdom and Ireland are investigating a foodborne outbreak suspected to be caused by norovirus in live oysters.

The oysters are thought to have come from Ireland and been purified in the UK and it is believed they are no longer on the market.

Harvesting records and purification operations at the unnamed implicated business in Ireland have been checked with nothing proving that oysters harvested at the time were contaminated.

A number of people fell ill in England and the investigation has pointed towards a potential norovirus outbreak linked to one restaurant.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) told Food Safety News that it has sought detailed clarification on traceability and delivery channels.
