Russia – Six botulism deaths in Volgograd in first half of 2020

Officials in the Volgograd region in Southern Russia have reported 60 botulism cases in the first half of 2020.

Of the sixty cases, six fatalities were reported.

About 200 people suffer from this severe disease affecting the central nervous system in the region every year. Now the inhabitants of the region are actively engaged in the preparation of homemade canned food for the winter.

This has prompted the Office of Rospotrebnadzor in the Volgograd region to put some restrictions.

Experts advise against buying pickles on the street and homemade smoked meats. Housewives should not reduce the amount of salt and vinegar or shorten cooking time during home preservation.

People who died from food poisoning at Rodama in Kieni West, Nyeri County, started experiencing pains diarrhea and abdominal pains three days after eating the food.

• Nderitu said he did not suspect foul play. He said there might have been poor handling of the food which led to contamination.

Four people who died of food poisoning in Rodama, Kieni West, started feeling abdominal pains and had diarrhoea three days after eating food at dowry ceremony.

Mugunda MCA Joseph Nderitu, who was part of the guests, said the event was held on Thursday but people started feeling the symptoms on Saturday.

“Many of the people started complaining of diarrhoea, vomiting and abdominal pains on Saturday,” he said on Monday.

The Nyeri County health department has increased its surveillance after four people died after eating at a dowry ceremony at Ruirii village in Kieni constituency last Thursday.

Director of Medical Services Nelson Muriu said residents who attended the ceremony trooped to hospitals exhibiting cholera-like symptoms.

The food was outsourced from Kitengela in Kajiado County for the event attended by more than 250 guests from Nyeri and Nairobi counties.

CHOLERA

The groom’s mother who had accompanied her son from Nairobi, died in the city. The bridegroom is receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital.

“The patient at KNH has tested negative for cholera and is being treated for food poisoning,”

South Africa -Listeriosis: Four more killed, death toll approaches 200

More than 16 months after this listeriosis outbreak began, the disease is still claiming lives across South Africa.

Although the amount of deaths per week is on the decline, listeriosis remains a highly dangerous threat. On 4 March, the source of the outbreak was traced back to Enterprise Foods’ Polokwane facility.

Full product recalls were issued for all ready-to-eat foods produced by both Enterprise Foods and Rainbow Chicken.

How many people has Listeriosis killed?

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) released a report over the weekend which now places the death toll at 193 – that’s four more fatalities in the last week.

The disease particularly affects elderly citizens and neo-natal infants – babies aged 28 days or less. A staggering 81 deaths attributed to this outbreak have been of newborns.

France- Morbier and Mont d’Or cheese behind 10 deaths in France – 2015-2016 – Salmonella

Ten people died and another 80 fell ill in France after eating contaminated Morbier and Mont d’Or cheese in a salmonella outbreak that health authorities knew about, a new report has revealed.

An investigation by France Inter radio said the two cheeses made in the Franche-Comté region in the east of the country from unpasteurised milk were at the root of the outbreak in late 2015 and early 2016.

The investigation produced a document which showed that in January 2016 national health authorities had discovered an unusually high number of salmonella contaminations in France that was centred on Franche-Comté.

Five cheese making companies in the region, between them making 60 different brands, were later identified as being at the source of the contaminations that began in November 2015 and continued until April the following year.

Those who died in the outbreak were old people who were physically weak or who suffered from another illness.

Ireland – Woman died due to Salmonella after Communion function, inquest told

A woman who contracted food poisoning at a First Communion function died due to salmonella, an inquest has heard.

Investigations into the outbreak are continuing, an inquest into the death of 55-year-old mother of one Sandra O’Brien heard.

Ms O’Brien, from Rivervalley, Swords, Co Dublin died on 21 May, 2017 following the consumption of food prepared at O’Dwyer’s Bar and Grill, Strand Road, Portmarnock, Co Dublin.

Ms O’Brien’s husband, Garda Sgt Michael O’Brien, attended a short inquest hearing into her death at Dublin Coroner’s Court.

Investigations by two separate authorities are ongoing into the salmonella outbreak, the inquest heard.

Tanzania – Rukwa Controls Cholera ‘Fully’

Sumbawanga — RUKWA region has officially declared that cholera has been fully controlled and that the lives of citizens in the Lake Rukwa Basin in Sumbawanga District are safe. Latest reports had it that the deadly disease that started on November 15 , last year and lasted for 108 days killed nine people.

A total of 403 victims were diagnosed with the disease. The Sumbawanga District Medical Officer (DMO) , Dr Fani Mussa, told the “Daily News” at the weekend that the most affected wards include Mfinga, Kalumbaleza, Muze, Mwadui and Mtowisa along the Lake Rukwa Basin in Sumbawanga District.

Dr Mussa said measures taken to address the outbreak of the disease worked well and subsequently the disease has been controlled. “Efforts taken to address the outbreak of the disease included enlightening people on proper hygiene.

USA – Utah Hepatitis A – Second Death

The Salt Lake County Health Department (SLCoHD) announced today that two county residents have died due to Utah’s ongoing hepatitis A outbreak. The first death occurred in January but due to other health conditions affecting the individual, officials were waiting on confirmatory tests to declare an official cause of death. The second death occurred in late March.

Australia – Rockmelon Listeria Death Toll Rise to Six

A NSW woman in her 90s with significant underlying health conditions has passed away from listeriosis taking the number of deaths linked to contaminated rockmelon to six – three people from NSW and three from Victoria.The total number of people affected nationwide remains at 19.

Dr Vicky Sheppeard, Director Communicable Diseases NSW Health said the woman had developed listeriosis before the outbreak was identified.

“There have been no new cases notified associated with the outbreak in NSW since 19 February when it was first identified,” Dr Sheppeard said.

“It is still possible that more cases will be linked to the outbreak given the incubation period for the disease is up to 70 days, however there is no ongoing risk of listeriosis from rockmelons now on sale.

Australia – Australian Rockmelon Listeria Outbreak: 19 Sick with 5 Dead

As of today, a total of nineteen people have been affected by the Australian Listeria outbreak linked to contaminated rockmelon, in New South Wales (6), Victoria (8), Queensland (4) and Tasmania (1). There are three fatalities in Victoria and two in New South Wales have also died from eating the tainted fruit.Through the use of state of the art genetic sequencing technology the outbreak was narrowed from thousands of possible sources to a grower in Nericon, Rombola Family Farms.

People who are most vulnerable to Listeria infection (such as older persons, and people who have weakened immune systems due to illness or pregnancy) are advised to discard all rockmelon purchased before March 1, 2018.
