Denmark – Outbreak with Salmonella Enteritidis sequence type 11 in Denmark

Since May 2023, the Statens Serum Institut has registered 20 cases of the same type of Salmonella Enteritidis. The Statens Serum Institut, the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration and the Norwegian Food Institute DTU are investigating the disease outbreak. The outbreak is part of an international outbreak and imported chicken kebabs are suspected.

According to a study, the Salmonella prevalence on tested foods on sale in the United Kingdom was low but highest for imported frozen chicken.

Researchers from the Quadram Institute and the University of East Anglia in England isolated Salmonella from 42 food samples.

Salmonella isolates collected from food using whole genome sequencing (WGS) were compared to isolates from humans in the UK.

Raw foods were collected at retail in Norfolk, including 311 samples each of chicken, leafy greens, and pork, 279 prawns, and 157 salmon between May 2018 and November 2019.

Research – Prevalence and Association of Campylobacter spp., Salmonella spp., and Blastocystis sp. in Poultry

Abstract

Poultry and poultry meat are considered the most important sources of human campylobacteriosis and salmonellosis. However, data about the occurrence of Campylobacter and Salmonella concomitantly with intestinal protozoa such as Blastocystis sp. in poultry remain very scarce. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the presence and possible interactions between these three microorganisms in fecal samples from 214 chickens collected either on farms or from live bird markets in Egypt. The results obtained showed that Campylobacter spp., Salmonella spp., and Blastocystis sp. were present in 91.6% (196/214), 44.4% (95/214), and 18.2% (39/214) of tested samples, respectively, highlighting an active circulation of these microorganisms. Moreover, a significant positive correlation was reported between the occurrence of Campylobacter spp. and Blastocystis sp. together with a significant negative correlation between Blastocystis sp. and Salmonella spp. This study confirms the association reported previously between Blastocystis sp. and Campylobacter spp. while disclosing an association between Blastocystis sp. and Salmonella spp.; it also highlights the need to improve studies on the interactions between bacteria and eukaryotes in the gut microbiota of poultry.

The Swedish Food Agency warns against consuming one production batch of chicken breast from Esja Gæðafæði due to suspected salmonella. The company has recalled the product and sent out a press release.

The recall only applies to production lot 23205.

Greece – Recall of unsafe food “CHICKEN CHICKEN KTPS WITH PEPPERS” – Salmonella

The E.F.E.T., and in particular the Regional Directorate of Epirus, during inspections within the framework of the “Official Control of Microbiological Food Safety Criteria” Program for the year 2023, sampled a frozen preparation of chicken meat, with the following information: “CHICKEN SOUVLAKI CHICO WITH PEPPER DISC – Chico from fresh chicken” with a production date of 01-24-2023 and an expiration date of 01-24-2024, produced by the FOOD MASTER AEBE company. Following laboratory analyzes at the Veterinary Laboratory of Ioannina, the presence of the pathogenic microorganism Salmonella spp.

E.F.E.T. demanded the immediate recall of the entire specific batch of the product in question and the relevant controls are already underway.

Consumers who have purchased the above product (the illustration of which is shown below) are requested not to consume it.

UK – Port health agency stops import of Salmonella tainted chicken

Port health officials in England have blocked a shipment of cooked chicken from entering the country because it was contaminated with Salmonella.

Suffolk Coastal Port Health Authority (SCPHA), part of East Suffolk Council, recently discovered Salmonella Mbandaka in 21,800-kilograms (48,000 pounds) of cooked chicken imported to the Port of Felixstowe.

In the UK, more than 130 people are sick with Salmonella Mbandaka after eating chicken products from Ukraine. Four patients were admitted to hospital and one person has died.

Intensified Official Controls started in April. This included a requirement that the next 10 imported consignments from the implicated establishment would be subject to extra inspections.
