USA – Sargento Cheeses Recalled For Possible Listeria Contamination

Some types of Sargento Cheeses are being recalled for possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. This recall was posted on the FDA’s Enforcement Reports page, not the regular recall page, so there is no mention about whether or not any illnesses have been reported to the company to date. The recalling firm is Sargento Foods of Plymouth, Wisconsin.

USA – Roland Foods, LLC Recalls Roland® Tahini (100% Ground Sesame Seeds) 16 Oz. Because of Possible Health Risk – Salmonella

Roland Foods, LLC (“Roland Foods”) of New York, New York is recalling a specific production code of Roland® Tahini (100% Ground Sesame Seeds) 16 oz. because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

Roland® Tahini (100% Ground Sesame Seeds) 16 oz. was distributed to many states through retail stores and foodservice outlets. The product was distributed by Roland Foods from September 2023 through January 2024.

This recall ONLY APPLIES to Roland® Tahini (100% Ground Sesame Seeds) 16 oz., Batch Number P024581, Production Code X0419, UPC Number 10041224701509, with a Best By Date of October 19, 2024. The product can be identified by the UPC, found under the barcode on the back of the product, or by the Production Code and Best Buy Date printed in black ink on the label near the top of the bottle.

To date, Roland Foods has received no reports of illness related to the recalled product.

The recall was as the result of a routine sampling program by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, which revealed that the product tested positive for Salmonella. The company has ceased distribution of the product and has initiated an investigation in partnership with the manufacturer as to the root cause of the problem.

Consumers who have purchased Roland® Tahini (100% Ground Sesame Seeds) 16 oz. are urged to discard any affected product. Consumers with questions may contact the company’s Recall Hotline at 800-622-1823. The Recall Hotline will be monitored from 9:00 a.m. EST – 5:00 p.m. EST.

Rico Brand of Salt Lake City, Utah is voluntary recalling Ready-to-eat Enchiladas made with Queso Fresco containing cheese as part of the voluntary recall from Rizo-Lopez Foods, Inc. due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Rico Enchiladas were distributed in northern Utah Supermarkets (Smith’s, Harmons, Macey’s The Store, Fresh Markets).

Recalled products include the products below. They are packaged in a in a Deep Meal tray – Plant Fiber – Film 800.

With the following lot numbers and expiration dates: Lot. 0234 02/13/24, Lot. 0264 02/16/24, Lot. 0304 02/20/24, Lot. 0334 02/23/24. These codes can be found attached to the main label on a white label.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with these products.

What’s New

  • A new outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 in raw cheddar cheese has been added to the table. A recall was initiated and an outbreak advisory was issued.

USA – FDA reports on Salmonella outbreak linked to red onions

A recent report from the Food and Drug Administration has found that a sheep farm was likely a contributing factor in the contamination of onions.

The finding came when investigators searched for the cause of a 2020 outbreak of Salmonella Newport foodborne infections associated with red onions from the Southern San Joaquin Valley and Imperial Valley in California.

“The outbreak, which caused 1,127 reported domestic illnesses and 515 reported Canadian cases, is the largest Salmonella outbreak in over a decade,” according to the research report. “This outbreak is also remarkable because the food vehicle, whole red onions, is a raw agricultural commodity that had not been previously associated with a foodborne illness outbreak.”

Symptoms of E. coli:

Symptoms begin anywhere from a few days after consuming contaminated food or up to nine days later. Symptoms include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea, and/or vomiting.

The severity or presence of certain symptoms may depend on the type of pathogenic E. coli causing the infection. Some infections can cause severe bloody diarrhea and lead to life-threatening conditions, such as a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), or the development of high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease, and neurologic problems.

  • Sold at retailers nationwide.

Ill people have reported purchasing RAW FARM-brand Raw Cheddar cheese at Sprouts Farmers Market and Bristol Farms. There may be other retailers who are selling the RAW FARM- brand Raw Cheddar cheese and we will update the advisory as more information becomes available.

  • Ongoing; updates will be provided as they become available.

Recommendations:

  • Do not eat, sell, or serve RAW FARM-brand Raw Cheddar cheese products.
  • Check your refrigerators and freezers for the RAW FARM-brand Raw Cheddar cheese (blocks or shredded) and throw them away. If you froze a product without the original packaging and can’t identify the brand, throw it away.
  • Consumers, restaurants, and retailers who purchased or received RAW FARM-brand Raw Cheddar cheese, including wholesale products, should carefully clean and sanitize any surfaces or containers that it touched. Follow FDA’s safe handling and cleaning advice to reduce the risk of cross-contamination.
  • Retailers that purchased this product and repackaged it for individual sale should remove the product from the market.
  • Due to the range in severity of illness, people should consult their health care provider if they suspect that they have developed symptoms that resemble an E. coli infection.

On February 15, 2024 Raw Farm was contacted by the FDA and CDC regarding the epidemiological possibility that Raw Farm raw cheddar cheese might have caused some illnesses within a date range of October 18th 2023 and January 31 st 2024. During this period, there were ten fecal samples collected from patients in 4 states that appeared to match one another in the National PULSENET database. Some of these patients did not report consumption of any Raw Farm cheddar cheese or other raw dairy products. In full cooperation and collaboration with the CDC and FDA, Raw Farm is voluntarily recalling the above date codes of Raw Cheddar Cheese. If you have any of these Raw Cheddar Cheese date codes, please do not consume and return for credit.

No product samples consumed by consumers or products available for sale have tested positive for E.Coli 0157:H7. This recall is in abundance of caution strictly based on fecal samples submitted to PULSENET.

Product en-route for delivery, being delivered now, and in the future is not affected by this Voluntary Recall. Only product on the retail shelf, which should have a date code of 20231113-1 or older should be ;:recalled. Shredded cheese with date 20240116 or older should be recalled.

USA – Iowa Egg Company Inc. – Warning Letter – Salmonella

On June 28-29, 2023, the Iowa Department of Agriculture, under contract with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), inspected your shell egg farm and egg processing facility, where your eggs are washed, graded, and packed, located at 3407 Kirkwood Ave., Osage, IA 50461. The inspection revealed serious violations of the Prevention of Salmonella Enteritidis in Shell Eggs During Production, Storage, and Transportation regulation (the Shell Egg regulation), Title 21, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 118 (21 CFR Part 118). Failure to comply with the provisions of 21 CFR 118 causes your shell eggs to be in violation of section 361(a) of the Public Health Service Act (the PHS Act), 42 U.S.C. § 264(a). In addition, these violations render your shell eggs adulterated within the meaning of section 402(a)(4) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (the Act), 21 U.S.C. § 342(a)(4), in that they have been prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions whereby they may have become contaminated with filth, or whereby they may have been rendered injurious to health. You may find the Act, the PHS Act and Shell Egg regulation through links on FDA’s home page at http://www.fda.gov.

At the conclusion of the inspection, Iowa Department of Agriculture State inspectors issued Mr. Jose Hernandez, Site Manager, an FDA Form 483 (FDA-483), Inspectional Observations. To date, FDA has not received a response describing corrective actions. Based on our review of the inspectional findings, we are issuing this letter to advise you of our concerns and to provide detailed information describing the findings at your farm. Your significant violations are as follows:

1.  You did not have and implement a written Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) Prevention Plan that includes, at minimum, the SE prevention measures required by 21 CFR118.4. You have a document titled “SE Prevention Plan”; however, as describedbelow, this plan is inadequate in that it does not address all required SE prevention measures.
