Penn Herb Company Ltd of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is recalling 51 bottles (60 Capsules per bottle) of Nature’s Wonderland Thyroid Formula (Item #: Sm32x, Lot #: 23289A), because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
Product was distributed through the Penn Herb Company Ltd website (www.pennherb.com) and retail store. 47 customers who purchased the product were notified directly.
Nature’s Wonderland Thyroid Formula was packaged in a white plastic bottle with a blue cap. The label specifies the Item #: Sm32x, and the Lot #: 23289A. The location of the Lot # is circled below:
No illnesses have been reported to date.
The recall was as the result of a routine sampling program by FDA which revealed that the finished products contained Salmonella. The company has ceased the production and distribution of the product as the company continues their investigation as to what caused the problem.
Any consumer who has Nature’s Wonderland Thyroid Formula (Item #: Sm32x, Lot #: 23289A) should discontinue use immediately and are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. | Reason For Issuing Alert | The CFS collected the above-mentioned sample from a retail outlet in Tsuen Wan for testing under its routine Food Surveillance Programme. The test result showed that the sample contained Bacillus cereus at a level of 130,000 per gram. According to the Microbiological Guidelines for Food, if ready-to-eat food contains Bacillus cereus at a level of more than 100,000 per gram, it is considered unsatisfactory.
Bacillus cereus is commonly found in the environment. Unhygienic conditions in food processing and storage may give rise to its growth. Consuming food contaminated with excessive Bacillus cereus or its heat-stable toxins may cause gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting and diarrhoea. |
| Action Taken by the Centre for Food Safety | CFS has informed the vendor concerned of the irregularity and has instructed the vendor to stop sales and to remove from shelves the affected batch of the product. The distributor concerned has initiated a recall of the affected batch of the product according to the CFS’s instructions.
The CFS will alert the trade to the incident, and will continue to follow up and take appropriate action. An investigation is ongoing. |

Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
Products subject to the recall were shipped to distributors located in Arkansas, California, Maryland, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas. Products may end up in food service distribution, convenience stores and vending. Items were produced between May 11, 2023 and June 6, 2024.

The recall was initiated after environmental samples tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. The company is working in conjunction with the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to conduct this recall. The production of these products has been suspended while the FDA and the company continue to investigate the source of the problem.
Anyone concerned about an illness should contact a healthcare provider. To date, there have been no reports of illness or adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.
