Research – Rare Salmonella type sickens people in Denmark and Austria
A rare type of Salmonella has sickened 20 people in Denmark and 17 in Austria.
Since July, the Statens Serum Institut (SSI) has recorded 20 cases of Salmonella Umbilo.
There are 14 men and six women sick. Patients range from under 1 to 85 years old, and the median age is 52.
Egypt – Hundreds suffer intestinal illnesses due to E. coli outbreak in Egypt’s Aswan
CAIRO, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) — Egyptian Minister of Health and Population Khaled Abdel-Ghaffa reported on Monday that Aswan Governorate, southern Egypt, has seen a surge in intestinal flu cases, with 480 patients having visited local hospitals.
During a press conference, Abdel-Ghaffar noted that while most of these patients have been discharged, 78 are still recovering, and 36 remain in intensive care due to pre-existing chronic conditions.
The minister identified E. coli bacteria as the primary cause of gastroenteritis in the region, attributing the outbreak to the contamination of drinking water with sewage. He indicated that the daily influx of cases at Aswan hospitals has averaged between 18 and 19.
In response to the outbreak, a collaborative task force has been established, involving the Ministry of Housing, the Drinking Water Company, and Aswan Governorate, to investigate the sources of intestinal infections.
Abdel-Ghaffar reassured the public that water quality has been verified as safe across all water stations in Aswan, following thorough testing of water samples.

The outbreak has occurred on the 1,959-passenger Arcadia during its current sailing from the UK to the US and Canada. Some 65 passengers and 10 crew members have reported symptoms of a gastrointestinal illness including vomiting and diarrhoea, according to the US health agency, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

USA – 20 cases of Salmonella linked to Valencia restaurant
After initiating an investigation last week, the L.A. County Department of Public Health confirmed that 20 cases of salmonella have been linked to a Mexican restaurant in Valencia as of Monday afternoon.
The investigation began following a number of reports of people experiencing symptoms of food poisoning after dining at Madre Oaxacan Restaurant & Mezcaleria between Sept. 12 and 14.
According to Ivan Vasquez, owner of the restaurant, a health inspector is coming Tuesday morning to do a check-in. If all goes well, the restaurant could reopen as soon as Wednesday evening.
