New Zealand – Public health warning about shellfish in the Orewa and Warkworth area, North Island – PSP Toxins

MPI

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) today issued a public health warning against collecting shellfish from the Orewa and Warkworth area. The warning extends from Takatu Point on the Tāwharanui Peninsula, south to Huaroa Point on the Whangaparoa Peninsula. The warning includes Mahurangi Harbour, Kawau Island and the smaller islands west of Kawau Island.

Routine tests on shellfish samples taken from Mahurangi Harbour have shown levels of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) toxins above the safe limit of 0.8 mg/kg set by MPI. Anyone eating shellfish from this area is potentially at risk of illness.

Mussels, oysters, tuatua, pipi, toheroa, cockles, scallops, catseyes, kina (sea urchin) and all other bivalve shellfish should not be eaten.

Note, cooking shellfish does not remove the toxin.

Pāua, crab and crayfish may still be eaten if the gut has been completely removed prior to cooking, as toxins accumulate in the gut. If the gut is not removed its contents could contaminate the meat during the cooking process.

Symptoms typically appear between 10 minutes and 3 hours after ingestion and may include:

  • numbness and a tingling (prickly feeling) around the mouth, face, and extremities (hands and feet)
  • difficulty swallowing or breathing
  • dizziness
  • headache
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhoea
  • paralysis and respiratory failure and in severe cases, death.

If anyone becomes ill after eating shellfish from an area where a public health warning has been issued, freephone Healthline for advice on 0800 61 11 16, or seek medical attention immediately. You are also advised to contact your nearest public health unit and keep any leftover shellfish in case it can be tested.

Monitoring of toxin levels will continue and any changes will be communicated accordingly. Commercially harvested shellfish – sold in shops and supermarkets, or exported – is subject to strict water and flesh monitoring programmes by MPI to ensure they are safe to eat. There is no commercial harvesting of shellfish in the affected area.

New Zealand – Nationwide recall of Countdown branded potato egg & bacon prepack salad – Listeria monocytogenes

MPI

Countdown branded potato egg & bacon prepack salad with a use by date of 13 July 2021 is being recalled as it may contain listeria bacteria.

Countdown initiated the recall from its Countdown, Fresh Choice, and Supervalue supermarkets nationwide following the discovery of listeria as part of routine testing.

More information, including the use by date of the affected product

To date, New Zealand Food Safety and Countdown have not received any reports of illness.

Listeria can make people sick (listeriosis) if they consume contaminated food.

New Zealand Food Safety national manager food compliance services, Melinda Sando, says people who have purchased the affected product should throw it away or return it to the retailer for a full refund.

“Healthy adults are likely to experience only mild infection, causing mild diarrhoea and flu-like symptoms.

“However, listeriosis infection can be serious among vulnerable groups such as pregnant women and their unborn babies, newborn babies, people with weakened immune systems, and the frail and elderly.

“For those in the high-risk groups, listeriosis typically has an incubation period of 2 to 3 weeks (or longer) before symptoms appear.

“If you have consumed any of these products and have any concerns about your health, seek medical advice,” says Ms Sando.

“An earlier recall at the store in October followed the detection of listeria in some packaged meat products. Subsequent visits by MPI, as well as testing at the store revealed the presence of listeria on equipment, resulting in a precautionary recall to ensure risk to consumers is minimised.

“Listeria is commonly found in the environment and can make people sick (listeriosis) if they consume contaminated food.

“Infection can be serious among vulnerable groups such as pregnant women and their unborn babies, newborn babies, people with weakened immune systems and elderly people.

“For those in the high-risk groups, listeriosis typically has an incubation period of 2 to 3 weeks (or longer) before symptoms appear.

“Healthy adults are likely to experience only mild infection, causing mild diarrhoea and flu-like symptoms.

“If you have consumed any of these products and have any concerns about your health, seek medical advice,” says Ms Sando.

If you or anyone in your household is in an at-risk group, it is especially important to take a few simple food safety precautions:

  • Follow New Zealand Food Safety guidance on high-risk foods to avoid.
  • Follow good food hygiene practices, such as washing and drying hands before preparing food and after handling or preparing raw foods.
  • Eat freshly cooked or freshly prepared foods.
  • Wash all raw fruit and vegetables very well before eating.
  • Cook foods thoroughly.

Refrigerate leftovers immediately and do not keep for more than 2 days. Reheat to steaming hot before eating.

The contamination occurred at Pak’n Save Blenheim. Products from the manufacturers listed that are sold in their own packaging at Pak’n Save Blenheim or sold elsewhere are not affected.
