USA – Update Multistate Outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 Infections Linked to Romaine Lettuce

  • Thirty-one more ill people from 10 states were added to this investigation since the last update on April 18, 2018.
  • Three more states have reported ill people: Colorado, Georgia, and South Dakota.
  • The most recent illness started on April 12, 2018. Illnesses that occurred in the last two to three weeks might not yet be reported because of the time between when a person becomes ill with E. coli and when the illness is reported to CDC.

South Africa – 50 New Cases of Listeriosis Reported Since Product Recall

Fifty new cases of listeriosis have been reported since affected food products were recalled on March 4, according to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD).

Eight additional cases were reported last week while one case, that occurred in October 2017, was retrospectively reported, stated the NICD’s latest report.

A multisectorial incident management team (IMT) has been formed by the National Department of Health (NDoH) to strengthen co-ordination of outbreak response and strengthen health systems to prevent future outbreaks. Funding is being sourced.

 The number of cases of laboratory-confirmed listeriosis reported per week has decreased since the implicated products were recalled on 04 March 2018, with eight additional cases reported this week. Of the eight cases reported this week, one case occurred in October 2017 and was retrospectively reported.

 Since the recall, a total of 50 cases have been reported

a. Twenty-four (48%) were among neonates ≤28 days old

b. Three (6%) were among children age 1 month to 14 years old

 As of 17 April 2018, a total of 1 019 laboratory-confirmed listeriosis cases have been reported to NICD since 01 January 2017.

USA – Western Connecticut State University outbreak sickens dozens

An outbreak of unknown etiology has sickened dozens on the campus of Western Connecticut State University (WCSU) and to date the source of the outbreak has not been pinpointed.

This outbreak is not believed to be connected with the national E. coli outbreak. Only two incidents of E. coli illness have been reported in Connecticut, and not in the Danbury region.

Any students who visit a doctor because of symptoms is asked to request tests, including an enteric bacterial stool culture and Norovirus testing. The WCSU Health Services hopes to speak to any student who became ill in order to identify the type of illness and potentially its source.

Sanitation of common areas on both campuses was completed Sunday. The cafeteria on the Westside campus was closed and cleaned Saturday, with reopening set for Sunday. The Midtown cafeteria will be closed and cleaned Sunday. As an additional precaution the university threw out all the food in the Westside cafeteria on Friday.

India – Gaya: 71 people fall sick due to food poisoning

Gaya: 71 people fall sick due to food poisoning At least 71 people, including children complained of loose motions, vomiting and other food poisoning symptoms after consuming food at a wedding function and were brought to a hospital in Gaya.

District Magistrate Abhishek Kumar Singh said, ‘We received a complaint regarding food poisoning.

The condition of the people is stable as of now and they are kept under medication.’.

USA – Hepatitis A – Outbreaks

Health officials in Indiana are urging residents to get vaccinated and take other steps to protect themselves from hepatitis A if they plan to travel to states that are experiencing outbreaks of the disease.

The Toledo-Lucas County Health Department has confirmed a case of hepatitis A in a food handler at Dave & Buster’s restaurant on Monroe Street, the department said Thursday.

Kentucky officials say three deaths have now been reported in a hepatitis A outbreak in six counties.The number was released Friday, along with a total number of cases of 352, through last Saturday. The state Department of Public Health recommends hepatitis A vaccinations for children older than 1 year and adults living in Jefferson, Bullitt, Hardin, Greenup, Carter and Boyd counties.

Salt Lake County Health Department (SLCoHD) announced today that people who consumed any food item from the Edible Arrangements store at 5211 South State Street in Murray between March 21 and April 13 may have been exposed to hepatitis A. This possible exposure affects only this Edible Arrangements location; health officials estimate that this store sold about 600 arrangements during this time.

Canada – At least 40 sick linked to 2 Canadian oyster farms – Norovirus

Two B.C. Vancouver Island oyster farms have been closed following an outbreak of norovirus associated with eating the raw shellfish.

The B.C. Centre for Disease Control says about 40 cases of acute gastrointestinal illness have been connected to the consumption of raw oysters since March. Testing has confirmed some of the cases were norovirus.

Federal officials with Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) confirmed the affected farms are located on the east coast of Vancouver Island at Deep Bay and Denman Island.

While the two farms are no longer harvesting oysters for consumption, no recall of oysters has been issued by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

UK – Why more than 60 diners fell ill after eating at this pub – Clostridium perfringens

Health chiefs have identified the cause of a food poisoning outbreak at a pub which left dozens of diners suffering with sickness and diarrhoea.

Public Health England (PHE) and North Somerset Council launched an investigation after more than 60 people reportedly fell ill after eating at the Old Farmhouse in Nailsea, North Somerset, on Mothering Sunday last month.

The PHE says initial investigations have indicated the most likely organism that caused people to fall ill is Clostridium perfringens.

The infection often occurs when foods are prepared in large quantities and kept warm for a long time before serving.

USA -Norovirus Suspected – 50 Ill Washington DC Tour Group

More than 50 tourists were hospitalized for possible food poisoning Sunday night after arriving in Washington, D.C. from New York.

The D.C. health department said Monday they suspect members of the group have norovirus, which is highly contagious.

Firefighters were called to the Hotel Harrington in downtown D.C., blocks east of the White House, for a report of multiple people exhibiting symptoms of food poisoning. A large number of medics and police officers responded, temporarily blocking traffic.

Forty-eight teenagers and three adults were taken to hospitals. There were so many patients that the D.C. fire department had to use ambulance buses.
