Europe – Greenyard Frozen to restart production at site linked to deadly Listeria outbreak

Food Safety News

The Hungarian frozen vegetable factory believed to be the source of a Listeria outbreak that sickened 54 people in six countries, killing 10 of them, is set to restart production.

Following shutdown and cleaning, all tests at the Baja production site were negative for the presence of Listeria monocytogenes, according to a statement from Greenyard Frozen, which is part of the multinational Greenyard Group.

The follow-up tests were performed by the company with external experts including Campden BRI and confirmed by the Hungarian authorities’ own analysis.

Greenyard did not give a restart date but said it would be in the short term with more information being released in coming weeks. Company officials previously said they decided to stop production to do an in-depth review and would not restart or release the freezing lines until they found and eliminated the root cause of the Listeria contamination.

Pakistan – PIMS treats 3000 people for food poisoning during Eidul Azha

Pakistan Today

As many as 3,000 patients complaining of food poisoning visited the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) during Eidul Azha holidays, according to PIMS Media Coordinator Dr Waseem Khawaja.

Dr Khawaja said, “About 1,200 anti-tetanus injections were administered to those who came with injuries due to traffic accidents, doing wheelies, falling from swings and sustaining cuts while slaughtering sacrificial animals or cutting meat.”

“Some people also came with injuries from animal bites and free of cost treatment and medicines were provided to them,” he added.

The doctor explained, “During Eidul Fitr holidays, we get fewer patients but on the occasion of Eidul Azha the number increases because people don’t eat a balanced diet and the portion of protein increases in their diet.”

USA – McDonald’s Breakfast Sandwiches Might Be Linked To 22 Food Poisoning Cases

Delish.com

Fresh off of the news that McDonald’s was pulling salads from about 3,000 locations after a parasite outbreak that infected at least 436 people, the chain is now dealing with another possible issue with food safety, though on a much smaller scale.

As Business Insider reports, 22 people have reported that they have become sick with common food poisoning symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea between the dates of August 4 to 21. The New York Department of Health interviewed 15 of those people, and they all said that they had eaten breakfast sandwiches at a McDonald’s location in Jamestown, New York.

“McDonald’s is fully cooperating with this investigation and is readily following all recommendations of the State and County Health Departments while this investigation continues,” the department said in a collaborative statement with the Chautauqua County Department of Health.

The franchise’s owner has temporarily closed the location to clean the food-preparation area, review food prep, and obtain a fresh supply of ingredients. Breakfast sandwiches from the restaurant, as well as patient samples, have been sent for testing at the New York State’s Public Health Laboratory in Albany.

USA – FSIS Issues Public Health Alert for Empire Kosher Poultry, Inc. Raw Chicken Products due to Possible Salmonella Contamination

USDA USDA

WASHINGTON, August 24, 2018 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) and Empire Kosher Poultry, Inc. are issuing a public health alert out of an abundance of caution due to concerns about Salmonella illnesses reported in the northeastern and mid-Atlantic United States that may be associated with raw chicken products.

The Empire Kosher brand raw chicken items, which may include raw whole chicken, raw chicken parts, were produced and sold to consumers from September 2017 to June 2018.

On June 18, 2018, FSIS was notified of multiple Salmonella I 4,[5],12:i:- illnesses within the northeastern  and mid-Atlantic United States. Working in conjunction with public health partners, FSIS determined that there is a potential link between Empire Kosher brand raw chicken products and this illness cluster. Based on available epidemiological information, multiple case-patients have been identified in the northeastern and mid-Atlantic United States, many of whom reported consumption of Empire Kosher brand chicken products. Approximately half of affected case-patients have been hospitalized due to illness with illness onset dates ranging from September 2017 to June 2018. FSIS continues to work with the company and public health partners and will provide updated information should it become available.

Research – Aflatoxin Contamination of Dried Insects and Fish in Zambia

Journal of Food Protection

Dried insects and fish are important sources of income and dietary protein in Zambia. Some aflatoxin-producing fungi are entomopathogenic and also colonize insects and fish after harvest and processing. Aflatoxins are carcinogenic, immune-suppressing mycotoxins that are frequent food contaminants worldwide. Several species within Aspergillus section Flavi have been implicated as causal agents of aflatoxin contamination of crops in Africa. However, aflatoxin producers associated with dried fish and edible insects in Zambia remain unknown, and aflatoxin concentrations in these foods have been inadequately evaluated. The current study sought to address these data gaps to assess potential human vulnerability through the dried fish and edible insect routes of aflatoxin exposure. Caterpillars (n = 97), termites (n = 4), and dried fish (n = 66) sampled in 2016 and 2017 were assayed for aflatoxin by using lateral flow immunochromatography. Average aflatoxin concentrations exceeded regulatory limits for Zambia (10 μg/kg) in the moth Gynanisa maja (11 μg/kg), the moth Gonimbrasia zambesina (Walker) (12 μg/kg), and the termite Macrotermes falciger (Gerstacker) (24 μg/kg). When samples were subjected to simulated poor storage, aflatoxins increased (P < 0.001) to unsafe levels in caterpillars (mean, 4,800 μg/kg) and fish (Oreochromis) (mean, 23 μg/kg). The L strain morphotype of A. flavus was the most common aflatoxin producer on dried fish (88% of Aspergillus section Flavi), termites (68%), and caterpillars (61%), with the exception of Gynanisa maja, for which A. parasiticus was the most common (44%). Dried fish and insects supported growth (mean, 1.3 × 109 CFU/g) and aflatoxin production (mean, 63,620 μg/kg) by previously characterized toxigenic Aspergillus section Flavi species, although the extent of growth and aflatoxigenicity depended on specific fungus-host combinations. The current study shows the need for proper storage and testing of dried insects and fish before consumption as measures to mitigate human exposure to aflatoxins through consumption in Zambia.
