NTV on Sunday aired an explosive exposé dubbed ‘White Alert’ which highlighted how millions of Kenyans consumed toxic food products as parliament watched silently.

In the 90-minute investigative documentary, former Member of Parliament for Naivasha Constituency, John Mututho, brought to light how former Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs) Managing Director the late Dr Kioko Mang’eli tried to stop poisonous maize from being released into the market.

In a sworn affidavit, which was tabled in Parliament in May 2009, the former Kebs boss accused the Prime Minister and officials in his office of putting pressure on him to authorize the maize in dispute.

Australia – Fifteen people Australia-wide hit with Salmonella after Core Powerfoods recall

Fifteen people have been struck with salmonella following a national recall of frozen meals sold at Coles and IGA supermarkets.

Core Powerfoods issued a recall of their frozen meals, including the 310g or 350g Going Nuts, Deep South Chilli, Muay Thai Meatballs, Holy Meatballs, Naked Chicken, Seismic Chicken, Old School, and Smokey Mountain Meatballs.

USA- Omaha is having a Hepatitis A problem

Nebraska state and local health officials are investigating five cases of hepatitis A in the Omaha metro area.

The five cases have been reported within the past three weeks, with symptom onset between October 15 and November 5. That means the five likely were exposed in mid-September, Adi Pour, director of the Douglas County Health Department, said Friday.

The five, all female, range in age from 14 to 73. Three of the five were hospitalized. Two have been released; health officials don’t know the status of the third hospitalized person.

Pour said health officials so far have not identified a product or place connecting the individuals. They are spread throughout the community and have not had any known contact with one another. Health officials have excluded international travel and shared needles as possible routes of transmission.

USA – Wild Ginger in Cortland New York link in Campylobacter Outbreak

The Cortland County Health Department is alerting residents of an outbreak of Campylobacteriosis among people who ate at Wild Ginger, Main St., Cortland, between 10/18/2019 and 10/31/2019. To date, seven patrons have tested positive for this bacterial infection.

USA – Poke Pop in Fircrest Washington liked to Norovirus Outbreak

Update—Nov. 7, 2019

We received new reports from people who said they got sick with norovirus-like illness after they ate at Poke Pop in Fircrest. Since yesterday’s update, we received 9 more illness reports for a total of 26.

The illness reports fall into 2 categories:

  • Primary—22 report they got ill after they ate at Poke Pop.
  • Secondary—4 got ill away from Poke Pop from exposure to customers who reported illness after they ate there.

The exposure dates range from Oct. 30-Nov. 4 for everyone who got sick. People got ill about a day and a half after exposure. Their illness lasted about 2 days.

Canada – Public Health Notice – Outbreak of Listeria infections linked to Rosemount brand cooked diced chicken is over.

November 1, 2019 – Final Update

This is the final update to this notice. The outbreak appears to be over and the outbreak investigation has been closed.

The Public Health Agency of Canada collaborated with provincial public health partners, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Health Canada to investigate an outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes infections involving three provinces: British Columbia, Manitoba and Ontario. The outbreak appears to be over and the outbreak investigation has been closed.

Based on the investigation findings, Rosemount brand cooked diced chicken was identified as a likely source of the outbreak. Rosemount cooked diced chicken was supplied to institutions (including cafeterias, hospitals and nursing homes) where many of the individuals who became sick resided, or visited, before becoming ill.

On August 18, 2019 the Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued a food recall warning for Rosemount brand cooked diced chicken meat 13mm – ½” (#16305), packdate – 01/21/2019. During the food safety investigation, the CFIA identified additional affected products and updated food recall warnings have been issued. For additional details on all recalled product names and lot codes, please consult CFIA’s website.

Canadians are advised not to eat any of the recalled products or any foods containing the recalled products. Food service establishments are advised not to sell or serve any recalled products, or any items that may have been prepared or produced using recalled products.

Kenya -10 Admitted to Isiolo Hospital After Eating Bad Camel Meat

At least 10 people have been admitted to a hospital in Isiolo County after they are bad camel meat.

Officials said Friday that about 165 other people were treated and discharged.

The 175, including children and adults, consumed the uninspected meat from a camel that died mysteriously.

The victims were treated of vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach ache symptoms.

It is alleged that the owner of the camel had been directed to bury the carcass of the camel that died from unknown disease but ignored the directive.

USA – Salmonella Dublin in Ground Beef Sickens 10 in 6 States

As of November 1, 2019, a total of 10 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Dublin have been reported from 6 states.

Illnesses started on dates ranging from August 8, 2019, to September 22, 2019. Ill people range in age from 48 to 74 years, with a median age of 68. Eighty percent of ill people are male. Of nine ill people with information available, eight (89%) were hospitalized, which is much higher than we would expect for Salmonella infections. The hospitalization rate is usually about 20%. One death has been reported in California. In five (50%) ill people, Salmonella was found in samples of blood, which indicates their illnesses may have been more severe. Typically, Salmonella Dublin illnesses are more severe because they can cause bloodstream infections, which are serious and require hospitalization.

Sweden – Sweden officials investigate Salmonella Newport outbreak

Swedish health officials aka Folkhalsomyndigheten report investigating a national outbreak of Salmonella infection last week.

According to authorities, with the help of whole-genome sequencing, 25 cases of disease have been linked to an outbreak of Salmonella Newport.

The cases are spread in 12 counties and have fallen ill from August 16 to October 12.

The Swedish National Food Agency and the Public Health Agency together are investigating the outbreak to identify the source of the infection that is unknown so far. As part of the investigation, the cases are interviewed about what they ate before they became ill.

Iceland – Iceland reports increase in Norovirus

Health officials in Iceland are reporting an increase in norovirus infections in recent weeks. Local media report (computer translated) a large number of residents at the retirement home Hrafnista in Hafnarfjörður have been diagnosed with the virus and last week the infant play school Ársól in Grafarvogur was closed due to infection.

In addition, dozens of employees at the accounting firm, KPMG were stricken with the virus and everyone recovered.
