USA – Cuise Ship Norovirus Yet Again?

The Princess Cruise line Ruby Princess has reported a stomach illness outbreak on its latest cruise. The ship had voyage dates of March 3 to March 10, 2013. Symptoms include vomiting and diarrhea. There is no known cause, although the cause of most outbreaks on cruise ships is norovirus. Symptoms of that highly contagious virus include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, along with possible headache and low grade fever.

Two hundred sixty six passengers (out of 3,129) and 10 crew (out of 1,189) reportedly became ill during the voyage. The outbreak was communicated to the Vessel Sanitation Program of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on March 10, 2013, so no on board response to the outbreak was conducted.

USA – Cruise Ship – Norovirus – Again

The Royal Caribbean cruise ship Vision of the Sea has reported an outbreak of norovirus that has sickened at least 105 people, according to the San Francisco Gate. The ship had 1,991 passengers on board and 772 crew members, which means 5.3% of the passengers were sickened.

The ship docked in Port Everglades, Florida on Friday March 7, 2013 and was thoroughly cleaned and sanitized before its next journey. Passengers “responded well to treatment”, according to the company.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Canada Safeway Limited are   warning the public not to consume The Gourmet Meat Shoppe and The Butcher’s Cut brands of Frozen Beef Burgers described below because these products may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 bacteria.

USA-Further Recalls – Taylor Farms Organic Baby Spinach EHEC E.coli

Sam’s Club, Walmart and some Kroger stores are recalling Taylor Farms organic baby spinach products sold under a a variety of names  due to possible contamination with E.coli. The brand names under recall include Central Market Organics, Full Circle Organic, Marketside Organic, Simple Truth Organic and Taylor Farms Organic.

Recalled Simple Truth Organic baby spinach was sold at stores owned by the Kroger company. They include King Soopers, City Market, Fry’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs, Food4Less, FoodsCo, QFC and Smith’s in Texas and Louisiana.  At this time,  illnesses have not been reported in association with the recalled products. But consumers who have purchased any of them  should not eat them as E.coli can cause serious illness.  Symptoms of an E.coli infection include abdominal cramping anad diarrhea that is often watery or bloody. Consumers who have already eaten the spinach and develop these symptoms should see a doctor.

Australia – Third Death Linked to Listeria monocytogenes in Cheese

A LISTERIA outbreak linked to a Victorian cheese factory has claimed a third life. A 68-year-old NSW man died from the infection last month, a Victorian health department spokesman confirmed on Sunday.

A Tasmanian man, 44, and a Victorian man, 88, have also died of the illness.

A total of 26 cases, including the three fatal cases and one miscarriage, have now been linked to the Jindi cheese factory in Gippsland.

Some soft cheeses produced by Jindi were pulled from supermarket shelves last year but the Victorian health department spokesman said the bacteria had a long incubation period.
