UK -Salmonella outbreak linked to British eggs

Food Safety News

Almost 40 people are part of a Salmonella outbreak traced to eggs from the United Kingdom.

A spokesman for Public Health England told Food Safety News that it does not hold information on the date of onset of illness for all the patients.

“There have been 38 reported cases linked to this incident through analysis of whole genome sequencing data. Cases range in age from 6 months to 85 years; 19 are female and 19 are male. We are aware of two cases having been hospitalized,” the spokesman said.

A notification on the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) portal from early July shows that eggs contaminated with Salmonella Enteritidis were subjected to physical or chemical treatment in the Netherlands, which was a commercial decision by the producer.

Research – Food safety risk posed to consumers of table eggs from layer farms in Gauteng Province, South Africa: Prevalence of Salmonella species and Escherichia coli , antimicrobial residues, and antimicrobial resistant bacteria

Wiley Online hazegg.jpg

The study conducted on 39‐layer farms in Gauteng Province, South Africa determined the prevalence and resistance of enteropathogens, and antimicrobial residues in table eggs collected from the farms. Eggs were tested for the presence of bacteria using standard methods. The resistance of bacteria to eight antimicrobial agents was determined using the disc diffusion method. Antimicrobial residues were detected in table eggs using the microbial inhibition test, enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Risk factors for egg contamination by bacteria and antimicrobial residues were determined through a questionnaire survey of farmers. The farm prevalence of Salmonella spp. and Escherichia coli in table eggs was 7.7 and 48.7%, respectively. Nineteen (48.7%) and 2 (5.1%) of eggshells and egg contents, respectively, were positive for coli but only eggshells yielded Salmonella species, 2.0% (4 of 196). Overall, 71.4% of 49 coli isolates exhibited resistance to one or more antimicrobial agents. The farm prevalence and egg content prevalence of antimicrobial residues was 2.6 and 0.5%, respectively, with the detection of sulfonamide (79 ppb) and oxytetracycline (106 ppb). The prevalence of resistant coli and Salmonella spp. and the occurrence of antimicrobial residues in egg content may pose food safety and therapeutic threats to consumers.

Research – Reusing chicken litter shows benefits against Salmonella

Feed Stuffs

Broiler chickens raised for meat need millions of tons of litter, or bedding material, each year. Reusing chicken litter can save costs, but the practice has some health and safety concerns, according to an announcement from the American Society of Agronomy.

A new study shows that the environment in reused poultry litter can deter growth of pathogens like salmonella.

Australia – Salmonella explosion as 12 farms that sell produce to supermarkets are found to be infected – Eggs

Brinkwire hazegg.jpg

At least three people have come down with salmonella poisoning after purchasing eggs from a popular supermarket.

The infection is believed to have come from eggs bought in the Melbourne suburb of Werribee.

The Weekly Times reported the eggs were supplied from farms in New South Wales.

However, a spokesman for the NSW Department of Primary Industries disputed those claims.

‘There is no evidence to suggest the reported illnesses in Victoria are connected to NSW eggs, or even eggs. The matter is an active investigation being undertaken by Victorian authorities.

‘There are no current recalls of eggs in NSW and no warnings with regards to eggs.’
