Information -Extreme Weather Leads to Silage Mycotoxin Concerns

Given the extreme weather in 2019, producers and users of silage should carefully watch for molds and mycotoxins.

In a company news release, Alltech says extreme weather conditions and moisture levels can reduce yields and induce plant stress, and they can also lead to future issues for the crop, including mycotoxins and molds.

Mycotoxins are a concern for livestock producers, as they influence feed quality and animal safety. Samples of the 2019 corn silage from across the U.S. submitted to the Alltech mycotoxin analytical services laboratory include high levels of mycotoxins.

The samples have included an average of 7.13 mycotoxins, with a range of two to 14 mycotoxins per sample.

Dr. Max Hawkins, nutritionist with the Alltech Mycotoxin Management team, says, “These levels of mycotoxins found in the 2019 crop are significantly higher than the average values.”

USA – Natural Grocers Issues Recall on Organic Soybeans Due to Mold

Vitamin Cottage Natural Food Markets, Inc., a Lakewood, Colorado-based natural grocery chain, is recalling Natural Grocers brand 2-pound Organic Soybeans because they have the potential to contain mold. Consumers who may have purchased this product are advised to discontinue use and either throw it away or return it to the store for credit or refund.

The recalled product is packaged in clear plastic bags weighing 2 pounds and bearing the “Natural Grocers” label. Only packages bearing 19-168 and 19-205 as the packed-on dates are subject to recall.  The packed-on date can be found in the bottom left-hand corner of the label.

The potential for contamination was noted after routine testing by the company revealed the presence of mold.

Production of the product has been suspended while the Food and Drug Administration and the company continue their investigation into the source of the problem.

Kenya – Kenya: Kebs Recalls Five Maize Meal Brands Over High Aflatoxin Levels

Nairobi — The Kenya Bureau of Standard has suspended five maize flour brands from the market citing high levels of aflatoxin.

In a statement released Saturday, KEBS says Dola Maize Meal, Kifaru Maize Meal, Starehe Maize Meal, 210 Maize Meal, Jembe Maize Meal have been suspended following several tests done by the regulator.

“Following consistent market surveillance and testing, it has been established that the brands have not made the cut because their levels of aflatoxin are higher than the maximum limit allowed by relevant Kenya Standards,” reads the statement.

KEBS has also instructed the manufacturers to discontinue manufacturing and recall them from the market while instituting corrective neasures.
