USA – Abbott Voluntarily Recalls Certain Lots of 2 Fl. Oz./59 mL Bottles of Ready-to-Feed Liquid Products; Recall Is Not Expected to Impact U.S. Infant Formula Supply- Potential for Spoilage

FDA

Labeling, displays the location of the lot code on the individual unit

Abbott is initiating a proactive, voluntary recall of certain lots of 2 fluid ounce/59 milliliter bottles of Ready-to-Feed liquid products for infants and children, including the brands Similac® Pro-Total ComfortTM, Similac® 360 Total Care®, Similac 360 Total Care Sensitive, Similac® Special Care® 24, Similac Stage 1, Similac® NeoSure®, Similac Water (Sterilized) and Pedialyte Electrolyte Solution. The products included in the recall were manufactured at our Columbus, Ohio, manufacturing facility.

These products are being recalled because a small percentage of bottles (less than 1%) in the recalled lots have bottle caps that may not have sealed completely, which could result in spoilage. If spoiled product is consumed, gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting may occur.

This recall does not include any other liquid or powder formula brands or other nutrition products produced in our Columbus facility or elsewhere within our global nutrition manufacturing network. It also does not include any amino acid-based formulas or metabolic nutrition formulas.

This recall equates to less than one day’s worth of the total number of ounces of infant formula fed in the U.S. and is not expected to impact the overall U.S. infant formula supply. Abbott is continuing production of Similac 2 fluid ounce/59 milliliter Ready-to-Feed liquid formula products for hospitals and healthcare providers’ offices on a different production line. Similac infant formula will continue to be produced in alternative product sizes and formats for delivery to retail locations, in addition to increased production throughout our global manufacturing network.

The products included in the recall were distributed primarily to hospitals and to some doctors’ offices, distributors and retailers in the U.S., including Puerto Rico; one lot of products was sent to Barbados, Bermuda, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, St. Croix and St. Thomas; and two lots were sent to Canada, Curacao, Panama, and Trinidad and Tobago.

Singapore – Recall of eggs from Teo Seng Layer Farm 1 (Malaysia)due to presence of Salmonella Enteritidis

SFA

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has detected the presence of Salmonella Enteritidis(SE) in eggs imported from Teo Seng Layer Farm 1 in Malaysia.
The affected eggs can be identified by the stamp “CEJ027” on the eggs.
As SE may cause foodborne illness if food is consumed raw or undercooked, SFA has directed all six importers to withhold or recall the affected eggs.
In particular, BH Fresh Food Pte Ltd have been directed to recall the affected eggs that had been distributed to retail outlets for sale as a precautionary measure. The recall is ongoing. The other five importers have been told to withhold the affected eggs from distribution.
The farm is also suspended and will not be allowed to export their eggs to Singapore. SFA will lift the suspension only when the farm has rectified the SE contamination issue.
As SE can be destroyed by heat, eggs are safe to consume if they are cooked thoroughly. SE can survive in raw and undercooked eggs and may cause foodborne illness.
The symptoms include diarrhoea, abdominal pain, fever, nausea and vomiting. While the infection typically subsides within a week in most people, SE can cause serious infection in vulnerable population such as the elderly, young children, and those with weakened immune systems.
Consumers who have purchased the affected eggs are advised to cook them thoroughly before consumption. Those who have consumed the eggs and are unwell should seek medical attention.

USA – FSIS Issues Public Health Alert for Ground Beef Due to Possible E. Coli O103 Contamination

FSIS USDA

WASHINGTON, October 13, 2022 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is issuing a public health alert due to concerns that a specific ground beef product may be contaminated with E. coli O103. A recall was not requested because the products are no longer available for purchase.

The raw ground beef items were produced on October 4, 2022. The following product is subject to the public health alert view labels:

  • 1-lb. plastic vacuum-packed packages containing “FRANK’S BUTCHER SHOP GROUND BEEF” with “PACKED ON” dates of 10-07-2022 and 10-09-2022 on the label.

The establishment’s retail store location in Hudson, Wyoming sold the affected product directly to consumers. FBS Hudson is actively attempting to contact consumers who may have purchased 14 packages of ground beef product subject to the public health alert.

The problem was discovered when FBS Hudson alerted FSIS that its routine microbial testing results found Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) O103 in a sample of the ground beef. There have been no confirmed reports of illness due to consumption of these products.

Many clinical laboratories do not test for non-O157 STEC, such as O103 because it is harder to identify than STEC O157:H7. People can become ill from STECs 2-8 days (average of 3-4 days) after consuming the organism.

Most people infected with STEC O103 develop diarrhea (often bloody) and vomiting. Some illnesses last longer and can be more severe. Infection is usually diagnosed by testing of a stool sample. Vigorous rehydration and other supportive care is the usual treatment; antibiotic treatment is generally not recommended. Most people recover within a week, but, rarely, some develop a more severe infection. Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a type of kidney failure, is uncommon with STEC O103 infection. HUS can occur in people of any age but is most common in children under 5 years old, older adults and persons with weakened immune systems. It is marked by easy bruising, pallor and decreased urine output. Persons who experience these symptoms should seek emergency medical care immediately.
