Tanzania – Tantrade – Aflatoxin a Serious Problem

All Africa

MAIZE and groundnuts farmers have been warned on unsafe levels of aflatoxin in crops, a poisonous fungus that threatens their livelihoods and the health of consumers as it may cause cancer.

Addressing members of the Parliamentary Committee on Trade, Industry and Environment in Dodoma yesterday, Tanzania Trade Development Authority (TanTrade) Director-General Edwin Rutageruka said the country’s export potential of groundnuts into European and Asian markets have been hampered by the deadly carcinogenic fungus found in the food crops.

Medical and expert studies have suggested that aflatoxin, a well-known toxic chemical produced by a common fungus in soils and crop debris, attacks maize and peanut crops in the field, during harvest and grows to the storage.

Pig ear treats remain a source of Salmonella after decades of illnesses.

The most recent outbreaks linked with pig ears ended in October 2019 after at least 154 illnesses with 35 people hospitalized. Companies recalled treats imported from Argentina, Brazil, and Columbia.

Pig ear treats have been linked with illness outbreaks since at least 1999, when epidemiologists said the products likely sickened at least 30 people in Canada. U.S. authorities blocked entry of the implicated products.

Research – High mycotoxin levels pose risk to dairy farmers this winter

Dairy Global

A high risk of mycotoxin contamination in this year’s forage is posing a challenge for many producers and could be responsible for struggling milk yields and excessive feed waste and underutilisation, experts warn.

According to a press release, Bob Kendal, regional sales manager at Alltech U.K. says, while many producers have lots of forage available this year due to a bumper harvest, we have had a record number of mycotoxin related enquiries, and a number of silage test results have shown high levels of penicillium.

Information -Extreme Weather Leads to Silage Mycotoxin Concerns

Hoosier Ag Today

Given the extreme weather in 2019, producers and users of silage should carefully watch for molds and mycotoxins.

In a company news release, Alltech says extreme weather conditions and moisture levels can reduce yields and induce plant stress, and they can also lead to future issues for the crop, including mycotoxins and molds.

Mycotoxins are a concern for livestock producers, as they influence feed quality and animal safety. Samples of the 2019 corn silage from across the U.S. submitted to the Alltech mycotoxin analytical services laboratory include high levels of mycotoxins.

The samples have included an average of 7.13 mycotoxins, with a range of two to 14 mycotoxins per sample.

Dr. Max Hawkins, nutritionist with the Alltech Mycotoxin Management team, says, “These levels of mycotoxins found in the 2019 crop are significantly higher than the average values.”
