UK – Toddler, 3, fighting for her life after contracting deadly strain of E. coli on family holiday to Nottingham

The Mirror

A three-year-old girl is fighting for her life after catching a deadly strain of E. coli on a family holiday.

Harper Davis from Haverhill in Suffolk picked up the E. coli bug in Nottingham and it has left her in and out of intensive care and on dialysis.

Harper fell ill while the family of five were on holiday on August 10 with vomiting and diarrhoea.

She had picked up E. coli – a bacteria that is common in our guts but certain strains can cause serious illness.

Harper developed haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) – a rare kidney condition that is caused by one particular strain of E. coli.

It happens when red blood cells are destroyed and block the kidneys’ filtering system.

She has suffered acute kidney failure, had seizures, peritonitis and developed diabetes as a result of her illness.

She has also had three blood transfusions and at least three operations.

September is National Food Safety Education Month. It provides an opportunity to raise awareness about steps you can take to prevent food poisoning.

Every year, an estimated 1 in 6 Americans (or 48 million people) get sick, 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die from eating contaminated food. Some people are more likely to get a foodborne illness (also called food poisoning) or to get seriously ill.

Join us in sharing information about which groups of people are more likely to get food poisoning, symptoms of food poisoning, and what steps they or their caregivers can take to help prevent it. Also, learn when to see a doctor and how to report food poisoning.
