MPI

kswfoodworld Listeria monocytogenes

New Zealand Food Safety is advising the public to return Pak’n Save branded, sliced-in-store, ready-to-eat meat products purchased in Pak’n Save Blenheim as they may contain listeria bacteria (Listeria monocytogenes).

  • Pak’n Save Blenheim brand Roast Beef Meal

New Zealand Food Safety national manager food compliance services Melinda Sando said it was important for consumers to check the date mark on the product label.

“Customers should return the products to Pak’n Save Blenheim for a full refund or cook thoroughly (piping hot all the way through).”

The contamination occurred at Pak’n Save Blenheim. Products from the manufacturers listed that are sold in their own packaging at Pak’n Save Blenheim or sold elsewhere are not affected.

Listeria is commonly found in the environment and can make people sick (listeriosis) if they consume contaminated food.

Infection can be serious, and potentially life-threatening, among vulnerable groups such as pregnant women and their unborn babies, newborn babies, people with weakened immune systems and elderly people.

For those in the high-risk groups, listeriosis typically has an incubation period of 2 to 3 weeks (or longer) before symptoms appear.

Healthy adults are likely to experience only mild infection, causing mild diarrhoea and flu-like symptoms.

“No reports of illness have been received, however, if you have consumed any of these products and have any concerns about your health, seek medical advice,” Ms Sando said.

If you or anyone in your household is in an at-risk group, it is especially important to take a few simple food safety precautions:

  • Follow New Zealand Food Safety guidance on high-risk foods to avoid.
  • Follow good food hygiene practices, such as washing and drying hands before preparing food and after handling or preparing raw foods.
  • Eat freshly cooked or freshly prepared foods.
  • Wash all raw fruit and vegetables very well before eating.
  • Cook foods thoroughly.

Refrigerate leftovers immediately and do not keep for more than 2 days. Reheat to steaming hot before eating.

New Zealand Food Safety is working alongside Pak’n Save Blenheim on the recall and to establish the cause of the issue.

New Zealand – Shellfish biotoxin alert – Northland west coast

MPI

The Ministry for Primary Industries today issued a public health warning against collecting shellfish on the Northland west coast from Waipapakauri on 90 Mile Beach, south to Pouto Point on the northern head of the Kaipara Harbour. This includes the Herekino, Whangape and Hokianga Harbours. Warning signs will be posted in the coming days.

Another warning remains in place for the west coast of the North Island – from South Head (Manukau Harbour entrance) to Tirua Point (south of Kawhia).

Routine tests on shellfish samples taken from these regions have shown levels of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) toxins above the safe limit of 0.8 mg/kg set by MPI. Anyone eating shellfish from this area is potentially at risk of illness.

Mussels, oysters, tuatua, pipi, toheroa, cockles, scallops, catseyes, kina (sea urchin) and all other bivalve shellfish should not be eaten.

Note, cooking shellfish does not remove the toxin.

Pāua, crab and crayfish may still be eaten if the gut has been completely removed prior to cooking, as toxins accumulate in the gut. If the gut is not removed its contents could contaminate the meat during the cooking process.

Symptoms typically appear between 10 minutes and 3 hours after ingestion and may include:

  • numbness and a tingling (prickly feeling) around the mouth, face, and extremities (hands and feet)
  • difficulty swallowing or breathing
  • dizziness
  • headache
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhoea
  • paralysis and respiratory failure and in severe cases, death.

If anyone becomes ill after eating shellfish from an area where a public health warning has been issued, phone Healthline for advice on 0800 61 11 16, or seek medical attention immediately. You are also advised to contact your nearest public health unit and keep any leftover shellfish in case it can be tested.

Monitoring of toxin levels will continue and any changes will be communicated accordingly. Commercially harvested shellfish – sold in shops and supermarkets, or exported – is subject to strict water and flesh monitoring programmes by MPI to ensure they are safe to eat.

New Zealand – Recall of raw milk containing Campylobacter from Lindsay Farm in Waipukurau

MPI

Raw (unpasteurised) drinking milk from Central Hawke’s Bay producers Lindsay Farm is being recalled after Campylobacter bacteria was found in some product.

The recall affects Lindsay Farm branded raw drinking milk with a date marking between 3 July and 11 August, distributed in a range of locations between Dannevirke and Auckland. The product is sold in 2-litre plastic bottles.

Hawke’s Bay District Health Board have confirmed Campylobacter infection in a person whose family regularly drank Lindsay Farm’s raw milk. The person was admitted to hospital but has since been discharged. There are no other reports of illness in the family.

Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) food compliance manager Melinda Sando says people with Lindsay Farm raw milk at home should visit the MPI recalls website to check if it is among the batches of recalled product.

“If you have any of the recalled product, throw it out or return it to your supplier.

“You can also heat the raw milk until just boiling or at 70 degrees for 1 minute to kill any bacteria present before drinking it.

“Raw milk should also be refrigerated (at 4 degrees or less) to reduce the risk of any harmful bacteria in the milk growing to levels which may make you sick.

“If you have health concerns after drinking the product, talk to your doctor.

“Symptoms of Campylobacter infection are vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, fever, headache, and body aches.

“Drinking raw milk carries inherent risks as it may contain harmful bacteria which are killed through the pasteurisation process.

MPI is working with Hawke’s Bay District Health Board to minimise risk to the public.
