Danger  : Aflatoxin content too high

Aflatoxins are mycotoxins produced by certain species of Aspergillus molds that develop when the temperature and humidity of the food is high. Aflatoxins are considered genotoxic and carcinogenic by the European Food Safety Authority and can be dangerous with high and repeated consumption.

Problem: too high aflatoxin content.


The AFSCA is today recalling consumers of the product “toasted watermelon seeds” – roasted watermelon seeds (200g) of the NIK brand.

This recall follows a notification via the RASFF system (European Food and Feed Rapid Alert System) due to a too high aflatoxin content.
It was therefore decided to withdraw this product from sale and to recall it to consumers.

The AFSCA asks not to consume this product and to bring it back to the point of sale where it was purchased.

Matvælastofnun warns against the consumption of one batch of melon seeds from Essen AlHasnaA due to aflatoxin mold toxin, which is imported by the Middle East market. The company, in consultation with the Reykjavík Health Inspectorate, has stopped sales and recalled premium Class-Roter Wassermelonenkerne from consumers.

Matvælastofnun received information about the product through RASFF’s European Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed and notified the Authority.

The recall only applies to the following batch;

  • Product Name: Premium Class – Red Watermelon Seed
  • Shelf life: Best before Date: 31.12.2022
  • Bar Code: 2021-8600716
  • Net amount: 300 g
  • Country of production: Lebanon
  • Distribution: The Middle East Market, Lóuhólar 6, 111 Reykjavík

Consumers who have purchased the product are advised not to consume it and discard or return it to the store for a refund.
