Specimen taken from the four victims who died linked their deaths to E. coli, said health officials.

USA – Norovirus Suspected – O’Hare International Airport

Daily HeraldNorwalk_Caspid

The stomach ailment that grounded a group of Scandinavian tourists likely was not a Chicago souvenir, officials said Tuesday.

Seven members of a tour group fell ill Monday night before boarding a Scandinavian Airlines aircraft at O’Hare International Airport and were taken to nearby hospitals around 11 p.m

Later, two other travelers took sick after boarding Flight 944, which led the pilot to require all members of the group to leave the airplane before it departed for Copenhagen, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said.

“The pilot made the decision not to have anyone on the tour on his aircraft as he didn’t want anyone becoming violently ill over the ocean,” Langford said.

The Norwegian tourists numbered about 52 people, authorities said, and were on a bus trip from Memphis. Tenn., to Chicago.

Chicago Department of Public Health investigators are checking with food vendors and others with whom the group came into contact. It’s thought the bug was contracted outside of Chicago, spokesman Brian Richardson said.

The preliminary diagnosis is the norovirus, a contagious virus that can cause vomiting and diarrhea. It’s spread through contaminated food or from contact with infected people and surfaces.

Dubai – Introducing a Food Safety Program

HACCP EUROPADubai-to-Introduce-Food-Safety-Standard

Dubai is introducing a comprehensive food code with new rules on handling non-halal food, sources of products and handling of customer complaints.

It will unify the patchwork of food-safety guidelines under one umbrella.

“In the past maybe there were guidelines here and there, but now we’ll have one system,” said Asia Abdulwahab, the municipality’s head of food studies and planning.

“The inspectors will have a legal tool to be able to quote the clause and let people know what they are in violation of.”

Ms Abdulwahab was speaking yesterday at a food-inspection conference at Gulfood, the region’s largest food industry event, at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

Every section of the code will be accompanied by an explanation to help people understand what their breaches entail, and the consequences.

“In many food codes, they only give you the law and not the rationale,” Ms Abdulwahab said.

“But now there will be an explanation and that way the industry will be educated. When you know the reason behind something, you will stick to it.”

The project started in 2009, when the municipality began collecting local and international references, guidelines and best practices in food safety.

Two years later it matched Dubai’s regulations with overseas guidelines, and last year reviewed and updated the food code’s content. It is expected to be issued this month.

Workshops will be held until June to introduce the code. It will cover licensing, bacteria control, cleaning, maintenance, personal hygiene and training.

There will also be details about the import and export of food, and procedures for handling non-halal food, tracing and recalling products and how to handle customer complaints. Source: The National

USA – Recall Beef and Cheese Pie Products – Listeria

Food Poisoning Journal

Cantina Foods, a Buffalo, N.Y. establishment, is recalling approximately 2,375 pounds of ready-to-eat beef and cheese pie products because they were produced without the benefit of federal inspection, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

The following products are subject to recall:

  • Cartons containing four clear plastic bags with six 4-oz. “Beef and Cheese Pastellios” in each bag.

There are no labels or marks of inspection on the bags or cartons. The products were produced and sold from Oct. 3, 2012 through Nov. 20, 2012 and distributed to retail establishments in the Buffalo, N.Y. region. The individual pies may have been available for sale from heat trays at convenience stores.

The company had requested to voluntarily suspend its operations in September, 2012 after a food safety assessment by FSIS identified problems with the firm’s Listeria monocytogenes control program. Through their investigation, FSIS enforcement personnel identified the products in commerce and determined that the company had produced them without the benefit of inspection.

FSIS has received no reports of illness due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an illness should contact a health care provider.
