The state has ordered a recall of raw goat milk sold from a dairy farm west of Modesto.

Routing sampling found campylobacter jejuni bacteria, but no illnesses have been reported, the California Department of Food and Agriculture announced Monday.

The product came from Valley Milk Simply Bottled, a small operation along Maze Boulevard west of Hart Road. The same farm has had two recalls of cow milk because of the same bacteria since 2019, again with no illnesses reported.

Real Milk Timaru recall

New Zealand Food Safety’s national food compliance services manager, Jenny Bishop is advising customers to check the lot number and use-by date on the product and date of purchase.

“If you have any of the recalled product, throw it out or return it to Real Milk Timaru. Alternatively, heat it to 70°C and hold at this temperature for one minute. If you don’t have a thermometer, heat the milk until it nearly reaches a boil before drinking it.

“Listeria can make people sick (listeriosis) if they consume contaminated food.

“Listeriosis infection can be serious among vulnerable groups such as pregnant women and their unborn babies, newborn babies, people with weakened immune systems, and elderly people.

“For those in the high-risk groups, listeriosis typically has an incubation period of 2 to 3 weeks or longer before symptoms appear.

“Healthy adults are likely to experience only mild infection, causing mild diarrhoea and flu-like symptoms.

“If you have consumed this product and have any concerns about your health, seek medical advice,” says Ms Bishop.

Real Milk Timaru is a registered provider of raw milk.

New Zealand Food Safety have not received any reports of illness.

This product has not been exported.

USA – Hawaii’s food safety agency uses embargo to drive raw milk sales off the islands

Food Safety News

State and local health departments went for months with no concerns other than the pandemic. But this summer, they are finding the time and personnel to work on other public health issues.

Hawaii, for example, has had an embargo underway for unpasteurized goat milk. The Hawaii Department of Health’s Food Safety Branch found numerous pet stores on O’ahu were selling raw goat milk.

Hawaii retailers and restaurants must purchase only pasteurized Grade A milk and milk products.

Raw milk is not safe for human consumption. As of July 1, the Food Safety Branch found about 20 O’ahu pet stores selling raw milk. Under the embargo, pet stores or any other retailer with raw milk in their possession were fined up to $10,000 a day unless they removed the raw goat milk from sale and destroyed the product.
