Singapore – Two businesses and Director fined for food safety lapses

Ananda Kwang Krai Trading Pte Ltd was fined $4,000 by the Court today for
illegally operating an unlicensed cold store to store assorted meat and seafood
products for the purpose of sale. Laos and Thai Supermarket Ptd Ltd was also fined
$11,000 for operating a food establishment without a licence, selling meat products
from unapproved sources, and not labelling food in the prescribed manner. The
Director of both businesses, Thammavong Nout Anan, was fined $16,000 for failing
to prevent the offences from being committed.

USA – State tests show bacteria in raw milk; consumers urged to throw out products – Campylobacter

State officials in New York have issued a warning about unpasteurized, raw milk from Hu-Hill Farm in Fort Plain.

The milk has tested positive for campylobacter bacteria and could cause serious infections if consumed. Young children and the elderly are at heightened risk for serious illness.

The state Department of Agriculture and Markets issued the warning on Aug. 6. The organic dairy, on Lighthall Road in Fort Plain cannot sell any raw milk products until samples confirm it is free from bacteria.

Nature Of Danger:

Symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes infection can include mild flu-like symptoms, or gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. In rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications. Some people are more vulnerable to Listeria monocytogenes infections, including pregnant women, babies, and people with weakened immune systems, including the elderly. The incubation period (time between initial infection and first symptoms appearing) is on average 3 weeks but can range between 3 and 70 days.

Taiwan – Food Poisoning Cases Strike Taiwan Restaurants

Seven family members in Taichung, Taiwan were hospitalized on July 29 with suspected food poisoning, according to Taiwan News. Their symptoms, including abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting, are commonly associated with infectious gastroenteritis.

The patients, aged 7 to 43, ate at a traditional breakfast shop at 2:20 a.m., consuming various items including noodles, dumplings, and beverages. Symptoms began around 3 a.m.

The Taichung City Fire Bureau responded at 1:34 p.m., transporting all seven to Tungs’ Taichung MetroHarbor Hospital. They will remain under observation while the Taichung Food Safety and Sanitation Bureau investigates.

If the breakfast shop is found responsible, it may face legal consequences.

India – 80 Students Fall Ill Due To Food Poisoning In Uttar Pradesh

In a case of food poisoning, around 80 students from the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Ashram Method Inter College in Mehroona village of this district fell ill with symptoms of stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhoea, officials said on Monday.

The incident took place after the children had a dinner Sunday night, they said.

District Magistrate Divya Mittal told reporters that the students are in stable condition while an investigation into the incident is underway.

In an official statement, Assistant Commissioner of Food Safety Vinay Kumar Sahay said that a team from the Food Safety and Drug Administration inspected the inter college’s kitchen and storage area.

They collected seven samples, including prepared bread, lentils, vegetables, chili powder, chickpeas, mustard oil, and mixed pickles.

The samples were collected in the presence of the school’s director, Rajkumar Gupta, and a notice regarding storage and kitchen deficiencies is being issued.

The samples have been sent to a food laboratory for testing, and further action will be taken based on the results, Sahay said.
