USA – Cheese Recall Salmonella

Flat Creek Farm & Dairy of Georgia is recalling 200 pounds of Heavenly blue cheese because of possible Salmonella enteritidis contamination. As of yesterday, more than 90% of the product has been collected or destroyed. No illnesses have been reported to date.

The cheese is packed in clear plastic and ranges in sizes from 1/2 pound to whole wheels. The lot code is 130912XHB on the front of the package. It was distributed in certain parts of Alabama, Georgia, and Florida and via three online orders, which have all been notified.

Salads and sandwich wraps linked to a multistate E. coli outbreak were sold at Walgreens stores in Northern California and Trader Joe’s stores in California, Washington, Oregon and Arizona, according to a retail distribution list compiled by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA FSIS).  At least 26 people who ate the salads or sandwich wraps containing the salads, have become ill. Six of them have been hospitalized

More salads have been recalled in the wake of an E. coli O157:H7 outbreak in western states. The FDA and Whole Foods Market are recalling ready-to-eat Artichoke Wheatberry Salad and Southwest SooFoo Salads as a preventive measure after the large Glass Onion Catering recall because they may be contaminated with the pathogenic bacteria.

The salads have expiration dates between November 9 and November 13, 2013. They were sold in California Whole Foods Stores. The PLU numbers for the Artichoke Wheatberry Salad are 28563300000 and 28563400000. The PLU numbers for the Southwest SooFoo Salad are 28563700000 and 28563800000. The salads were sold during an unspecified time period.

Two strains of E. coli that have never been seen before are the source of two separate, ongoing  food poisoning outbreaks in California, health officials told Food Poisoning Bulletin today. One of these new strains is the source of the multistate outbreak linked to ready-to-eat salads produced by Glass Onion Catering of Richmond, CA and sold at Trader Joe’s and other grocery stores in several states. The other new strain has sickened four people in Humboldt County, in Northern California

USA – Salmonella Updates – Outbreak and Dog Treats

A Salmonella outbreak that is unrelated to Foster Farms chicken has sickened at least seven people in California,  Food Poisoning Bulletin has learned.  Several of those who became ill are residents of Shasta County. It’s possible that one illness in another state is also part of the outbreak.

A spokesperson from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) said state health officials are working together with local jurisdictions on an investigation of an outbreak of Salmonella Lomalinda infections, but would not provide further information saying “CDPH does not comment on ongoing investigations.”

Bailey’s Choice Dog Treats of Georgia is recalling some packages of certain chicken jerky treats because it may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. The chicken treats are in various sizes and with these lot dates: June 5, 2013 and October 8, 2013. Those two lots tested positive for the bacteria.

USA – Listeria Issues – BI-LO – Taylor Farms – Reser Foods – Garden Fresh

The FDA is announcing that the BI-LO store at 500 Furys Ferry Road in Martinez, Georgia is recalling Taylor Farms Spinach Antipasti Salad because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. This is an expansion of an earlier recall by Reser’s Foods. No other BI-LO stores are affected by this recall.

The Taylor Farms Spinach Antipasti Salad was sold between October 19 and October 27, 2013. If you purchased this salad, return it to the place of purchase for a refund.

There are no reports of illness associated with the consumption of this product

Taylor Farms Tennessee and Taylor Farms Maryland are recalling many broccoli salad kits because they were made with recalled ingredients from Reser’s Fine Foods. The kits may  be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The recall of Garden Fresh Foods ready to eat chicken and ham products for possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination is expanding. THe previous recalls were for 25,748 pounds of product on September 25 and October 17, 2013. Now the company is recalling 103,080 additional pounds of food.

USA – Cyclospora Outbreak Update

As of September 20, 2013 (5pm EDT), CDC has been notified of 643 ill persons with of Cyclospora infection from 25 states: Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York (including New York City), Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

Most of the illness onset dates have ranged from mid-June through mid-July.

Public health officials in Iowa and Nebraska performed investigations within their states and concluded that restaurant-associated cases of cyclosporiasis in their states were linked to a salad mix produced by Taylor Farms de Mexico.

Epidemiologic and traceback investigations conducted in Texas by state and local public health and regulatory officials, the FDA, and CDC indicated that some illnesses among Texas residents were linked to fresh cilantro from Puebla, Mexico.

USA – Clostridium botulinum – Black Spiced Chai

Harmony Chai is recalling its Concentrated Black Spiced Chai and Decaffeinated Rooibos Chai because it may not be properly processed and could possibly be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum bacteria. There have been no reported illnesses to date in connection with the consumption of this product.

Netherlands- May Put Limits on Campylobacter on Chicken

A report from the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment in the Netherlands states that the Dutch government “intends to limit the level of Campylobacter bacteria on chicken meat, a so-called process hygiene criterion.” That means that if higher levels of the bacteria are found repeatedly in a particular slaughterhouse, that facility will need to evaluate their processing hygiene. The government has been focusing on “farm to fork” hygiene, looking at everything from slaughterhouse conditions to consumer food preparation standards.

Australia – Canberra Salmonella Outbreak Update

The alleged restaurant The Copa Brazilian Churrasco in Canberra has taken down its sign, after 140 cases of food poisoning were reported by its diners.

At least 30 of the cases have pinpointed salmonella as the cause, according to laboratory tests.

The food poisoning occurred during Mother’s Day weekend this year.

USA – No Salmonella in Zachary Confectionary Easter Eggs

Chocolate covered marshmallow eggs made by Zachary Confections, Inc. recalled earlier this week are not contaminated with Salmonella after all, the company says.  On February 28, the  Frankfort, Ind. company issued a recall of the candy for potential contamination with Salmonella but “all products have been confirmed not to contain Salmonella and are safe to consume,” according to a statement on the company’s website.

Whole Foods Market is recalling ricotta salata sold in 21 states and Washington D.C. because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. This is an update of a previous recall. There is a nationwide outbreak caused by that bacteria that has sickened at least 18 people in 12 states and D.C
