Food Standards Scotland (FSS) and the Food Standards Agency (FSA) are reminding reptile owners who have purchased certain frozen feeder mice for their pets to take extra precautions in order to avoid contracting salmonellosis. An outbreak of Salmonella has been linked to specific frozen mice products and as a result, a product recall information notice detailing affected products has been issued.

FSS and the FSA are instructing reptile owners and others who have a supply of the affected frozen mice to return them to the place of purchase so they can be carefully disposed of. They are also warning people to be extra careful when handling any frozen rodents, not just the batches identified, due to the risk of Salmonella from other batches linked to this recall.

Since the outbreak was first reported in 2015, there have been almost 900 cases of illness. FSS and the FSA advise that the risk to the general public is considered to be very low.

UK – Advice to reptile owners following withdrawal and recall of frozen mice used as food for pets linked to Salmonella outbreak in people

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) is issuing further instructions to reptile owners following an outbreak of human salmonellosis linked to frozen mice used to feed snakes and other animals and birds.

The FSA, along with Food Standards Scotland, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the Animal and Plant Health Agency and the UK Health Security Agency, Public Health Wales and Public Health Scotland are advising animal keepers not to feed their pets specific batches of frozen mice.   

Since the outbreak was first reported in 2015, there have been almost 900 cases of illness. Salmonella (which causes salmonellosis) is a common bacterial disease that affects the intestines and can pass from animals to people or via consumption of contaminated food or exposure to contaminated environments and cause infection. 

This outbreak of Salmonella has been linked to specific frozen mice products and as a result, a product recall information notice detailing affected products has been issued by the FSA. The recall does not affect rats from the same supplier, however investigations are ongoing. Should concerns about the safety of rats be identified, our advice will be updated accordingly.
The FSA is instructing reptile owners and others who have a supply of the affected frozen mice to return them to the place of purchase so they can be carefully disposed of.

However, the FSA and partners are also warning people to be extra careful when handling any frozen rodents including mice product and packaging, not just the batches identified, due to the risk of salmonella from other batches linked to this recall. 
People should be extra vigilant, washing hands thoroughly with soap and water immediately after contact, when handling not just the product, but their reptiles and associated equipment and environment, due to the risk of the illness.

A government spokesperson said:

“In September this year, the FSA introduced new requirements for shops to provide a leaflet warning about the risks of Salmonella and how to keep customers safe when buying and feeding frozen mice to their reptiles. However, the outbreak continues and a full withdrawal and recall of the specific batches of frozen mice is necessary. The withdrawal and recall does not affect rats from the same supplier, however investigations are continuing, should concerns about the safety of rats be identified, advice will be updated.

Therefore, if you have the affected feeder mice product in your freezer, please return it to where you purchased it from so it can be disposed of carefully and thoroughly clean and disinfect any surfaces it has been in contact with, including your hands. We are also asking people to be extra vigilant with all frozen rodent product, however, do check the specific information about which batches are involved as retailers will not be accepting other material.”

Advice to reptile owners about feeding their pets

Snake owners and others using frozen mice as food may have concerns about maintaining their animal’s welfare, as the product withdrawal and recall will cause short term shortages. There should be sufficient mice to maintain animal welfare for all snakes and other animals, including birds that need to be fed mice, if owners adapt their current feeding routines. Advice to parents and guardians of children handling reptiles

Children have been particularly affected so we are urging parents and guardians to make sure everyone washes their hands thoroughly with warm soapy water every time they handle and feed frozen mice to their pets and handle their reptiles to reduce risk of becoming ill with Salmonella. Both the vivarium and the areas reptiles are able to roam could be contaminated with salmonella. Good hygiene should be observed.

If you, or other family members become ill with symptoms such as diarrhoea, abdominal pain and fever, consult your doctor or NHS 111 and inform them that you own/keep a reptile. If you have symptoms, make sure you wash your hands regularly and avoid preparing food for others. Do not go to work or school until 48 hours after symptoms have passed to reduce the chances of passing on the infection.

Risk statement

The presence of Salmonella in the products listed above. Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause illness in humans and animals. The product could therefore carry a potential risk, because of the presence of Salmonella, either through direct handling of the products, or indirectly, for example from handling infected reptiles, their vivarium, utensils or contact with the faeces of these animals.

In humans, symptoms caused by salmonella usually include fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps. Infected animals may not necessarily display signs of illness, but symptoms can include diarrhoea.

Action taken by the company

Monkfield Nutrition Ltd is recalling the above products. Point of sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores that are selling these products. These notices explain to customers why the products are being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the products.

Our advice to consumers

(pet owners): If you have bought any of the above products do not use them. Instead, return them to the store from where they were bought for a full refund.
When handling and serving pet feed it is always advised to clean utensils after use. Consumers should wash hands thoroughly after handling reptiles, pet feed, utensils or after contact with the faeces of animals. Raw pet feed should be stored separately from any food (especially ready to eat foods). Care should be taken when defrosting to avoid cross contamination of foods and surfaces.
Carefully and thoroughly clean and disinfect any surfaces it has been in contact with, including your hands.

Research – Ongoing Outbreak of Extensively Drug-Resistant Campylobacter jejuni Infections Associated With US Pet Store Puppies, 2016-2020

Question  Are pet store puppies a source of extensively drug-resistant Campylobacter jejuni infection in the US?

Findings  This survey study identified 168 cases from public health reports of Campylobacter infections with an epidemiologic or molecular link to pet store puppies from 2011 to 2020; 97% of patients reported contact with a dog, of whom 88% reported contact with a pet store puppy. Isolates were resistant to 7 antibiotic classes, including all recommended treatment agents.

Meaning  Extensively drug-resistant C jejuni strains have emerged as a cause of illness among pet store customers, employees, and visitors; infections caused by these strains cannot be treated with commonly recommended oral antibiotics.

Abstract

Importance  Extensively drug-resistant Campylobacter jejuni infections cannot be treated with any commonly recommended antibiotics and pose an increasing public health threat.

Objectives  To investigate cases of extensively drug-resistant C jejuni associated with pet store puppies and describe the epidemiologic and laboratory characteristics of these infections.

Design, Setting, and Participants  In August 2017, health officials identified, via survey, patients with C jejuni infections who reported contact with puppies sold by pet stores. In conjunction with state and federal partners, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention investigated cases of culture-confirmed C jejuni infections in US patients with an epidemiologic or molecular association with pet store puppies between January 1, 2016, and February 29, 2020. Available records from cases occurring before 2016 with genetically related isolates were also obtained.

Main Outcomes and Measures  Patients were interviewed about demographic characteristics, health outcomes, and dog exposure during the 7 days before illness onset. Core genome multilocus sequence typing was used to assess isolate relatedness, and genomes were screened for resistance determinants to predict antibiotic resistance. Isolates resistant to fluoroquinolones, macrolides, and 3 or more additional antibiotic classes were considered to be extensively drug resistant. Cases before 2016 were identified by screening all sequenced isolates submitted for surveillance using core genome multilocus sequence typing.

Results  A total of 168 patients (median [interquartile range] age, 37 [19.5-51.0] years; 105 of 163 female [64%]) with an epidemiologic or molecular association with pet store puppies were studied. A total of 137 cases occurred from January 1, 2016, to February 29, 2020, with 31 additional cases dating back to 2011. Overall, 117 of 121 patients (97%) reported contact with a dog in the week before symptom onset, of whom 69 of 78 (88%) with additional information reported contact with a pet store puppy; 168 isolates (88%) were extensively drug resistant. Traceback investigation did not implicate any particular breeder, transporter, distributer, store, or chain.

Conclusions and Relevance  Strains of extensively drug-resistant C jejuni have been circulating since at least 2011 and are associated with illness among pet store customers, employees, and others who come into contact with pet store puppies. The results of this study suggest that practitioners should ask about puppy exposure when treating patients with Campylobacter infection, especially when they do not improve with routine antibiotics, and that the commercial dog industry should take action to help prevent the spread of extensively drug-resistant C jejuni from pet store puppies to people.

Food Standards Scotland (FSS) and the Food Standards Agency (FSA) are urging reptile owners who have purchased certain feeder mice for their pets, take extra precautions in order to avoid contracting salmonellosis.

Scientists have again confirmed a link between Salmonella detected in feeder mice distributed across the UK by Monkfield Nutrition, and an outbreak of human cases of Salmonella. Retailers must now legally provide customers buying these feeder mice with an information leaflet about the risks of Salmonella infection, and advise on good practice for handling animal food, and ensuring good hygiene in the home.

The outbreak was first investigated in 2015 and has so far resulted in almost 850 reported human cases, mostly, but not exclusively, in those living in households with one or more pet reptiles. FSS and the FSA advise that the risk to the general public is considered to be very low.

Research – High Occurrence of Shiga Toxin-Producing Escherichia coli in Raw Meat-Based Diets for Companion Animals—A Public Health Issue

Feeding pets raw meat-based diets (RMBDs) is becoming increasingly popular but comes with a risk of pathogenic bacteria, including Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC). In humans, STEC may cause gastrointestinal illnesses, including diarrhea, hemorrhagic colitis (HC), and the hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). The aim of this study was to evaluate commercially available RMBDs with regard to the occurrence of STEC. Of 59 RMBD samples, 59% tested positive by real-time PCR for the presence of Shiga toxin genes stx1 and/or stx2. STECs were recovered from 41% of the 59 samples, and strains were subjected to serotyping and virulence gene profiling, using whole genome sequencing (WGS)-based methods. Of 28 strains, 29% carried stx2a or stx2d, which are linked to STEC with high pathogenic potential. Twenty different serotypes were identified, including STEC O26:H11, O91:H10, O91:H14, O145:H28, O146:H21, and O146:H28, which are within the most common non-O157 serogroups associated with human STEC-related illnesses worldwide. Considering the low infectious dose and potential severity of disease manifestations, the high occurrence of STEC in RMBDs poses an important health risk for persons handling raw pet food and persons with close contact to pets fed on RMBDs, and is of concern in the field of public health.

Research – Raw Meat-Based Pet Feeding and Food Safety: Netnography Study of Pet Owner Comments and Review of Manufacturers’ Information Provision

Feeding raw meat to domestic pets is a popular practice. Because of the potential food safety implications associated with handling raw meat, concerns about pet owner health have increased. For this study, a netnographic content analysis approach was used to analyze posts from ‘PetForums Community’ online archives, relating to ‘raw meat-based feeding’ and ‘food safety’ ( n =308). UK manufacturer/supplier websites ( n =33) were reviewed for provision of food safety information relating to raw meat-based pet feeding. The data were analyzed using qualitative thematic approach and quantitative methods. Pet owner forum comments indicated potential malpractices and indifference towards the possible food safety hazards when preparing raw meat-based pet food. Many were risk aware but indicated confusion regarding appropriate food safety practices. Although emotional concern about the safety of the pets and children was expressed, contracting a foodborne disease was not perceived as a personal risk. Additionally, the review identified that the majority (61%) of manufacturer/supplier websites failed to provide any food safety instructions or warnings to pet owners regarding raw meat-based pet food. Information was inconsistent and varied between sources. The most comprehensive sources of information were provided by manufacturers approved by the UK Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association. This is the first netnography study to explore pet owner online reports and the provision of food safety information, related to raw pet feeding. Findings suggest pet owners may not fully appreciate the potential risks associated with raw meat-based pet feeding. Consequently, there is a need for credible and consistent strategies to inform the pet owners about potential implications associated with feeding raw meat to pets, as well as about safe food handling practices.
