Research – Cyclospora cayetanensis: A Perspective (2020–2023) with Emphasis on Epidemiology and Detection Methods

Abstract

Cyclospora cayetanensis infections are prevalent worldwide, and the parasite has become a major public health and food safety concern. Although important efforts have been dedicated to advance toward preventing and reducing incidences of cyclosporiasis, there are still several knowledge gaps that hamper the implementation of effective measures to prevent the contamination of produce and water with Cyclospora oocysts. Some of these data gaps can be attributed to the fact that access to oocysts is a limiting factor in C. cayetanensis research. There are no animal models or in vivo or in vitro culture systems to propagate the oocysts needed to facilitate C. cayetanensis research. Thus, researchers must rely upon limited supplies of oocysts obtained from naturally infected human patients considerably restricting what can be learnt about this parasite. Despite the limited supply of C. cayetanensis oocysts, several important advances have happened in the past 3 years. Great progress has been made in the Cyclospora field in the areas of molecular characterization of strains and species, generation of genomes, and development of novel detection methods. This comprehensive perspective summarizes research published from 2020 to 2023 and evaluates what we have learnt and identifies those aspects in which further research is needed.

Holidaymakers returning to the UK from Mexican all-inclusive resorts have been hit by a severe gastro-parasite infection, as the government warns of a large outbreak.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is investigating the cluster of Cyclospora infections in the United Kingdom among people who visited Mexico between May and August. Between May 12 and August 14, 74 cases of Cyclospora cayetanensis — a nasty gastric illness caused by a parasite only endemic in certain countries — were reported in England, Wales, and Scotland.

Almost 500 more people are sick in an outbreak of infections from the microscopic Cyclospora parasite. Sick people have been identified in 34 states.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reporting that there are now 1,063 patients identified as part of the outbreak. Of those with complete information available, 79 have been so sick they had to be admitted to hospitals. No one has died.

Health officials unable to pinpoint food that has sickened more than 100 who ate at Ridgway’sTaco del GNAR

Three months after the first diner reported falling ill, federal and state health officials still haven’t pinpointed the source of contaminated food that has sickened more than 100 people who ate at Taco del GNAR in Ridgway.

Paul Galloway, a spokesman for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, said a total of 144 cases of cyclosporiasis have been reported thus far to the state involving Western Slope residents who did not travel internationally. Health officials have attempted to interview 143 people, with all but 10 of them reporting they ate at the Ridgway taco shop. Of the remaining 10, two said they didn’t eat at the restaurant, one wasn’t sure and seven couldn’t be reached for an interview, according to Galloway. He said the last known date someone ate at Taco del GNAR and contracted the parasite was June 10.

The number of people infected with the Cyclospora parasite is likely much higher than that reported by the state health department, because the confirmed cases reflect only those who have reported their symptoms to the state or sought medical treatment.
