Cases will likely be in all of these states soon: Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.  Salads contaminated with Cyclospora were sold at other stores (Walmart).  All salads appear to have been manufactured by one processor (Fresh Express)

122 people with laboratory-confirmed Cyclospora infections and who reported eating bagged salad mix before getting sick have been reported from 7 Midwestern states (Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Wisconsin). Illnesses started on dates ranging from May 11, 2020 to June 15, 2020. 19 people have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.

Epidemiologic evidence indicates that ALDI Little Salad Bar brand Garden Salad, Hy-Vee brand Garden Salad, or Jewel-Osco brand Signature Farms Brand Garden Salad are a likely source of this outbreak.

USA – Wild Harvest® Basil Recalled for Cyclospora Parasite Contamination

United Natural Foods, Inc. (UNFI) recalled Wild Harvest® Organic Basil that was distributed from a facility in Hopkins, Minnesota, because it may be contaminated with Cyclospora parasites.

No illnesses or allergic reactions involving this product have been reported. It was distributed by SuperValu Inc., a subsidiary of UNFI.

The recall involves Wild Harvest® Organic Fresh Basil products sold in .25oz, .75oz, 2oz, and 4oz plastic clam shell containers (UPCs: 0071153550450, 0071153550322, 0071153550762, 0071153550323).

The product can be identified by a white sticker with black ink on the back of the container stating: “Product of Colombia” and “112.”

UNFI issued the recall voluntarily after the Cyclospora cayetanensis parasite was detected during routine sampling.

Infections with this parasite can cause a gastrointestinal illness called cyclosporoasis that is not usually life-threatening, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The symptoms may include watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, cramping, bloating, increased gas, nausea or fatigue. Less common symptoms include vomiting and a low-grade fever.

USA – Cyclospora Number One Multistate Food Poisoning Outbreak For 2019

Cyclospora is the number one multistate food poisoning outbreak for 2019, with more than 2400 people sick. This wasn’t an individual outbreak, but many individual cases and several outbreaks linked to a venue or product. The overall number of domestically acquired cases is higher than those from 2017 and 2018.

hese are the outbreaks of cyclosporiasis linked to a venue or food:

  • An outbreak associated with workplace cafeterias in Virginia that sickened at least 39 people.
  • A large cyclospora outbreak at Cooper’s Hawk Winery in the Jacksonville, Florida area sickened at least 132 people in 11 states.
  • An outbreak in Minnesota sickened 35 people and was associated with three restaurants located in different areas of the state.
  • Cyclosporiasis illnesses in New York City in July sickened more than 90 people.
  • A Boston Cyclospora outbreak, also in July, sickened more than 100 people.
  • A cyclospora outbreak linked to Siga Logistics de RL de CV basil imported from Mexico sickened more than 240 people. this was the largest individual outbreak in the overall case count.

In 2019 multiple outbreaks of cyclosporiasis were identified and found to be linked to different produce items, including imported fresh basil. On November 19, 2019, CDC issued a final update for the total number of domestically-acquired cases of Cyclospora in 2019, stating that 10% of the 2019 cases were linked to this outbreak associated with imported fresh basil.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and state and local partners, have been investigating a multistate outbreak of Cyclospora illnesses linked to fresh basil exported by Siga Logistics de RL de CV located in Morelos, Mexico.

FDA’s traceback investigation confirmed that the fresh basil available at points of sale where some consumers became ill was exported to the United States by Siga Logistics de RL de CV located in Morelos, Mexico. FDA continues its investigational activities.

Siga Logistics de RL de CV recalled potentially affected basil on July 24, 2019. The firm has been cooperative with the investigation, ceasing production and distribution of the product.

According to the CDC, this outbreak appears to be over.

HPS publishes annual surveillance reports for Cryptosporidium, Giardia and Cyclospora in Scotland, 2018

On 17 September 2019, Health Protection Scotland (HPS) published annual surveillance reports for laboratory-confirmed cases of:

  • Cryptosporidium – In 2018, HPS received 536 laboratory reports of Cryptosporidium. This represents an increase of 27 reports (5.3%) when compared with 2017 (509 reports), but is within the year-on-year variation observed in Cryptosporidium as reported in the previous ten years.
  • Giardia – In 2018, HPS received 199 laboratory reports of Giardia, which represents a decrease of 70 reports (26.0%) when compared with 2017 (269 reports).
  • Cyclospora – A total of 12 laboratory reports of Cyclospora were received by HPS in 2018, compared with 46 in 2017, 167 in 2016, 24 in 2015 and two in 2014.

The number of reported cases of domestically acquired cyclosporiasis has increased from the previous month and remains elevated in the United States since May 1, 2019.

As of August 28, 2019, 1,696 laboratory-confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis were reported to CDC by 33 states, District of Columbia and New York City in people who became ill since May 1, 2019 and who had no history of international travel during the 14-day period before illness onset.

EDINBURG — Hidalgo County health officials are warning residents about the growing number of parasites found in leafy vegetables that could cause medical concerns for vulnerable populations.

More than 70 cases of cyclosporiasis have been reported to the Hidalgo County Health and Human Services office, chief administrative officer Eddie Olivarez said Monday.

“It’s a public health concern we not only have in the Rio Grande Valley, but in the state of Texas, and even throughout the nation,” Olivarez said. “We’ve had over 70 cases in Hidalgo County; over 300 cases in the state of Texas and there’s over 1,200 cases in the United States. So much so, that the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) is concerned about it and putting out alerts in reference to this particular parasite.”

The number of reported cases of domestically acquired illnesses caused by cyclospora has increased from the previous month and remains elevated in the United States since May 1, 2019.

As of July 23, 2019, 580 laboratory-confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis were reported to CDC by 30 states, District of Columbia and New York City in people who became ill since May 1, 2019 and who had no history of international travel during the 14-day period before illness onset.

At this time, multiple clusters of cases associated with different restaurants or events are being investigated by state public health authorities, CDC, and FDA.

One multistate outbreak of Cyclospora infections has been linked to fresh basil imported from Siga Logistics de RL de CV of Morelos, Mexico . It is unknown at this time if other reported cases of Cyclospora infection in the United States this season are linked to fresh basil.
