South Africa – Peanut butter suppliers given 14 days to test products for Aflatoxin

Business Live

All manufacturers of peanut butter products have been called on to test for aflatoxin and present their results to the National Consumer Commission (NCC) within 14 days.

This comes after the recall of various peanut butter products earlier in February over concerns about the levels of the toxin. These include Pick n Pay No Name Smooth Peanut Butter, Eden Smooth Peanut Butter and Eden Crunch Peanut Butter, and certain batches of Dis-Chem’s Lifestyle Food peanut butter. The latest recalls also affected Woolworths’ peanut butter ice cream and certain Eat Naked products.

The consumer commission’s notice this week affects all peanut butter and peanut butter-based products, and products with peanuts, including chocolates, sweets, cookies, ice cream, and peanut butter spreads.

South Africa – Woolworths Pulls Peanut Butter Ice Cream Off Shelves Amid Aflatoxin Scare

BNN Breaking

In a move that has jarred consumers nationwide, Woolworths has announced a recall of its Peanut Butter Dairy Ice Cream, citing concerns over elevated levels of aflatoxin. This marks the latest in a series of peanut butter product recalls, with Woolworths previously asserting the safety of their range. The recall, which has rippled through households and sparked a broader conversation about food safety, is centered on the peanut butter ice cream variant; other peanut butter-infused products from Woolworths have been given a clean bill of health.

South Africa – Peanut butter health risk spreading: More brands recalled due to high Aflatoxin levels

The National Consumer Commission has issued a nationwide recall of various peanut butter brands due to high levels of Aflatoxin. Affected brands include Pick n Pay, Eden, Dischem, and Wazoogles Superfoods. Consumers are advised to return the products for a full refund to avoid potential health complications.

PRODUCT RECALL: CONSUMERS ARE URGED TO RETURN DISCHEM LIFESTYLE BRAND, WAZOOGLES SUPERFOODS, EDEN ALL NATURAL AND NO-NAME PICK N’ PAY PEANUT BUTTER
The National Consumer Commission (NCC) calls to attention all persons who have these peanut butter brands:

Dischem’s Lifestyle 400 grams Smooth and Crunchy,

Dischem’s Lifestyle 800 grams Smooth and Crunchy,

Wazoogles Superfoods- all sizes starting from 32g to 20 KG,

Pick n’ Pay’s No Name 1KG smooth and

Eden All Natural; to immediately stop consuming these products and return them to the point of purchase for a full refund with or without proof of purchase.
Pick n Pay’s No Name, Eden All Natural, and Dischem’s Lifestyle brands were distributed nationally, while Wazoogles Superfoods products were distributed mainly in the Western Cape.
The manufacturer, House of Natural Butters (Pty) Ltd, informed the Commission that all these brands were found to have higher than legally acceptable levels of Aflatoxin as set out under R1145 Regulation Governing Tolerance of Fungus-Produced Toxins in Foodstuffs. Failing to meet the quality standards rendered Lifestyle peanut butter, the No Name 1kg Pick n’ Pay, Wazoogles Superfoods, and Eden All Natural peanut butter unsafe for human consumption.

The Acting National Consumer Commissioner, Ms. Thezi Mabuza says while the Commission is investigating the affairs of the manufacturer House of Natural Butters (Pty) Ltd, the NCC will also conduct a nationwide assessment to establish whether other brands are affected. “The Commission urges the manufacturers, distributors, and suppliers of peanut butter to comply with regulations and conduct urgent tests to assess the safety of the products on their shelves and take immediate corrective steps if found to be unsafe.
The Consumer Protection Act requires that goods that pose any risk of harm to the consumer be recalled. It is the responsibility of the manufacturers, importers, and retailers to ensure that goods comply with all applicable laws and standards of the Republic. Aflatoxin may lead to health complications but not limited to nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. We, therefore, urge South African consumers who have the recalled products (No Name brand, the Eden All Natural brand, Wazoogles Superfoods, and Dischem’s Lifestyle brand) to immediately stop consuming these products and return the products to a point of purchase for a full refund, with or without proof of purchase” she concluded.
